This MotoSport guide walks you through safely flushing and bleeding the hydraulic brake system on a 2017 Can-Am Outlander MAX 570 DPS. Procedures are written for the stock DPS-equipped MMY Outlander MAX 570; follow factory torque and safety limits, and always use clean tools and proper DOT brake fluid (DOT 4 unless otherwise specified by your owner's manual).
What you’ll need
- DOT 4 brake fluid (fresh, unopened bottle)
- Brake bleeder kit or clear tubing & catch bottle
- Wrench set (including size for caliper bleeders and master cylinder cap)
- Assistant (recommended) or a one-man vacuum/pressure bleeder
- Clean rags, gloves, eye protection
- Jack or ramps and stands to safely raise the ATV
- Brake cleaner and small brush for cleaning fittings
Safety notes specific to the 2017 Outlander MAX 570 DPS
- Power steering (DPS) models have hydraulic steering separate from brakes; avoid cross-contamination. Brake fluid must never enter the DPS reservoir.
- ABS is not typical on this model year 570; if your unit has an aftermarket ABS or different braking option, follow the system-specific bleeding procedure.
- Avoid skin or paint contact with DOT fluid &ndash it damages plastics and paint. Clean spills immediately with brake cleaner.
- Brake fluid replacement interval: proactively replace fluid every 1&ndash2 years or sooner if the fluid is dark or contaminated.
Preparation
- Park on level ground, engage park/parking brake, kill the engine, and disconnect the battery negative if you’ll be working around electrical components.
- Raise the front and/or rear of the Outlander safely on stands to access calipers. Chock wheels you’re not lifting.
- Locate the brake fluid reservoir(s). On the Outlander MAX 570 DPS the master reservoir is under the right-hand plastics near the handlebars; there may be a secondary reservoir for the rear brake depending on exact trim. Refer to your fuel/airbox cover removal to access the cap if needed.
- Clean around the reservoir cap thoroughly to prevent dirt entering the system when opened.
Step 1 &ndash topping and preparing the system
- Wipe the cap clean, remove it, and carefully remove the diaphragm. Keep the reservoir topped with fresh DOT 4 fluid during the entire process to avoid introducing air.
- If you intend to fully flush the system, siphon or pump out most of the old fluid from the reservoir first, then refill with fresh fluid to the full mark.
Step 2 &ndash bleeding order and method
Use the following method for a complete flush and bleed. Bleed from the wheel farthest from the master cylinder first and finish with the closest. Typical sequence for Outlander MAX 570 (verify by visual on your unit):
- Rear brake caliper (farthest)
- Front passenger-side caliper
- Front driver-side caliper (closest)
Recommended methods: two-person pump-and-hold method, vacuum bleeder, or pressure bleeder. One-person vacuum/pressure systems are cleaner and avoid repeated pedal cycling that can introduce foam.
Step 3 &ndash standard two-person bleed procedure
- Have your helper sit on the ATV and apply steady pressure to the brake lever/pedal then hold it down.
- Open the bleeder screw on the caliper a 1/4 turn and allow fluid and air to flow into the clear tubing into the catch bottle. Close the bleeder screw before your helper releases the lever to avoid drawing air back into the system.
- Add fluid to the reservoir as needed to keep it at the full mark. Never let it run dry.
- Repeat the pump-open-close cycle until the expelled fluid runs clear and free of bubbles.
- Work through the bleeding order: rear, front passenger, front driver, maintaining reservoir level throughout.
Step 4 &ndash one-person vacuum or pressure bleeder
- Attach the vacuum hose to the caliper bleeder and apply a firm vacuum or attach a pressure bleeder to the master reservoir per the bleeder manufacturer’s instructions.
- Open the bleeder and allow fluid to be drawn until clear and bubble-free. Keep the reservoir topped if using a pressure bench.
- Close bleeders and repeat for each caliper in the recommended order.
Step 5 &ndash finishing
- Ensure each bleeder screw is snug &ndash do not over-torque; hand-tighten then a small additional turn with a wrench. Clean any spilled fluid.
- Refit the reservoir diaphragm and cap securely. Remove stands and carefully lower the ATV.
- Test brake feel with the engine off first: lever/pedal should feel firm and not sink. Start the engine and test brakes at low speed in a safe area before normal use.
Troubleshooting
- Spongy brakes after bleeding: re-check for remaining air, ensure bleeder screws close fully, inspect master cylinder and hose condition for internal collapse.
- Persistent sinking lever: check for leaks at calipers, lines, fittings, and master cylinder seals; replace damaged hoses or seals.
Parts & maintenance tips for the Outlander MAX 570 DPS
- Use OEM-quality replacement hoses and bleeder screws where available; rubber hoses age and can allow air entry even if they look intact.
- Replace brake pads and rotors in matched sets if they show excessive wear. Check caliper slide pins for free movement and lubricate with high-temp brake grease.
- If you service frequently, keep a sealed bottle of DOT 4 at the shop and a bleeder kit handy for quick maintenance.
- Record fluid change date in your maintenance log; this model benefits from regular hydraulic maintenance due to riding conditions it commonly sees.
When to consult a pro
If bleeding fails to restore firm brakes, if you discover internal master cylinder leaks, or if there are unusual noises/vibrations after service, stop and have a certified technician inspect the system. Brake system safety is critical.
Follow this MotoSport procedure to keep your 2017 Can-Am Outlander MAX 570 DPS stopping reliably & safely. Regular brake fluid service prevents corrosion and maintains braking performance for trail and work use.
