Overview

This MotoSport procedural guide covers draining and replacing the brake fluid on a 2017 Can-Am Outlander MAX 570 (MMY OLM570). Follow these steps to restore firm pedal feel, remove moisture from the hydraulic system, and maintain corrosion protection. Use this as your shop-friendly, MotoSport-branded how-to for a full fluid change and bleed.

What you'll need

  • DOT 4 brake fluid (new, unopened bottle)
  • Clear plastic tubing that fits bleeder nipples
  • Catch bottle or jar for old fluid
  • Brake bleeder wrench or 8 mm wrench (confirm bleeder size visually)
  • Turkey baster or fluid transfer syringe
  • Assistant to pump the brake lever/pedal
  • Clean rags, nitrile gloves, eye protection
  • Jack or ramps and sturdy jack stands for secure support
  • Torque wrench for reassembly (recommended)

Safety & model notes for the 2017 Can-Am Outlander MAX 570

  • The Outlander MAX 570 may be equipped with standard hydraulic brakes and, on some trims, brake-related sensors. Before starting, confirm whether your machine has ABS or other electronic brake aids; this guide assumes a conventional hydraulic system without electronic pump cycling. If your unit has ABS, consult a dealer for ABS-specific bleed procedures.
  • The factory uses DOT 4 brake fluid. Do not mix DOT 5 (silicone) fluid with DOT 3/4. Always use DOT 4 to match reservoir labeling and material compatibility.
  • Brake fluid damages paint and plastic – immediately wipe any spills and rinse with water. Keep fluid away from leather and rubber components not rated for brake fluid.
  • Brake hose routing on the MAX can allow trapped air pockets when only one corner is bled. Use the recommended sequence and raise wheels to the same level as the master cylinder where possible.
  • Dispose of old brake fluid responsibly at a recycling center; do not pour down drains.

Preparation

  • Park on a flat surface, set parking brake, and remove ignition key.
  • Support the Outlander securely with jack stands so wheels can rotate freely if needed. Chock unattended wheels.
  • Clean the master cylinder reservoir cap area to prevent contamination. Remove cap and diaphragm carefully.
  • Siphon out as much old fluid from the reservoir with a turkey baster or syringe to minimize contamination when topping with fresh fluid.
  • Top reservoir with fresh DOT 4 fluid, keeping the level near the max mark throughout the procedure.

Bleed sequence & rationale

Bleed starting with the caliper farthest from the master cylinder and move to the nearest. For the Outlander MAX 570 typical recommended sequence is:

  1. Rear right (farthest)
  2. Rear left
  3. Front right
  4. Front left (closest)

This sequence helps push air out from the most remote lines first so it does not migrate back into the circuit you already bled.

Manual two-person bleed method (recommended)

  1. Attach clear tubing to the bleeder nipple on the caliper you are starting with; place the other end into the catch bottle containing a thin layer of fresh fluid to prevent air re-entry.
  2. Have your assistant sit on the machine and slowly apply steady pressure to the brake pedal or lever until firm, then hold pressure.
  3. Open the bleeder nipple about a half-turn until fluid runs out and air bubbles are visible in the tubing. Close the nipple before the assistant releases the pedal/lever. Repeat this pump-and-hold cycle until you see no air bubbles and the expelled fluid is clean.
  4. After finishing that caliper, tighten the bleeder to the manufacturer-appropriate snugness (do not overtighten). Typical small bleeders are 6-12 ft-lbs; use a torque wrench if available and avoid rounding the nipple.
  5. Top up the reservoir as needed after each caliper so the master cylinder never runs dry.
  6. Repeat steps for each caliper following the bleed sequence.

One-person vacuum or pressure bleeder alternative

If using a vacuum pump or pressure bleeder, connect per tool instructions. Use the same farthest-to-nearest sequence, monitor reservoir level, and vent each caliper until clear fluid appears. Pressure bleeders shorten time and avoid the need for an assistant, but never exceed safe system pressure for ATV brake systems (follow your bleeder tool manual).

Finishing steps

  • When all calipers are cleared, verify reservoir fluid is at the max line and reinstall the diaphragm and cap securely.
  • Clean all fittings and wipe down calipers; check for any leaks at bleeders or hose fittings with light brake application.
  • With the vehicle still supported, rotate each wheel and apply brakes multiple times to check bite and even operation.
  • Lower the Outlander, perform a low-speed test ride in a safe area to confirm firm brake feel and no pulling or abnormal noises.
  • Recheck fluid level after test ride and inspect for leaks again.

Torque & hardware notes

  • Bleeder nipple torque should be light – tighten to snug; avoid stripping. If replacing bleeder screws, use OEM-spec parts.
  • Brake line fittings and banjos should be torqued per Can-Am specs when disturbed. If you remove banjo bolts, install new crush washers as required.

Troubleshooting

  • Spongy lever after bleeding: recheck reservoir level, ensure you followed the correct sequence, and repeat bleeding from farthest caliper. If persistent, inspect master cylinder and calipers for internal leaks or a failed piston seal.
  • Persistent air: raise the wheel to the same height as the reservoir or slightly higher and re-bleed; air can become trapped at high points in the line.
  • Leaking bleeder: replace nipple and re-bleed. Use proper sealing washers where applicable.

Maintenance interval recommendation

MotoSport recommends replacing brake fluid on the Outlander MAX 570 every two years or sooner if exposed to heavy use, trail water crossings, or heat. Regular changes keep boiling point high and protect internal components from corrosion.
