How to Bleed and Replace Brake Fluid on a 2017 Can-Am Outlander MAX 1000 XT-P
Shop parts for a 2017 Can-Am Outlander MAX 1000 XT-P ATV.
This MotoSport-exclusive guide walks you through a safe, complete brake fluid change and bleeding procedure specific to the 2017 Can-Am Outlander MAX 1000 XT-P (OLM1000XTP). Follow each step carefully, use quality tools & parts, and replace DOT 4 brake fluid with fresh fluid only. If your machine has any factory-installed ABS or electronic brake assist, follow the OEM ABS-bleeding procedure or have a pro perform the ABS-specific steps.
What you’ll need
- DOT 4 brake fluid (fresh, unopened bottle)
- Brake bleeder wrench or 8 mm/10 mm flare nut wrench (verify bleeder size)
- Clear plastic tubing that fits snugly over the bleeder nipple
- Catch bottle for old fluid
- Hand vacuum bleeder or pressure bleeder (recommended for speed & cleanliness)
- Clean rags, gloves, safety glasses
- Torque wrench (for caliper bolt retorque if removed)
- Small funnel and shop towels to protect paint and plastics
Pre-checks & safety
- Work on a level surface with the engine off and parking brake engaged (if applicable).
- Wear eye protection and gloves. Brake fluid is corrosive to paint and plastics.
- Confirm fluid spec: DOT 4 only. Do not mix DOT 5 (silicone) with DOT 4.
- Make note of the master cylinder reservoir location and cap vent screenkeep the cap clean to avoid contamination.
- If your Outlander is equipped with electronic ABS, disconnect battery only if recommended by the service manual and be prepared to cycle the ABS pump or use dealer diagnostics if air is suspected in the ABS unit.
Step 1 – Access the master cylinder reservoir
Locate the front and rear brake master cylinder reservoirs. Clean the area around the caps to prevent dirt falling in. Remove the caps and rubber diaphragms and cover the openings with a lint-free towel to reduce contamination. Do not leave reservoirs open unnecessarily.
Step 2 – Remove old fluid from the reservoir
Use a syringe or turkey baster to remove as much old fluid from each reservoir as possible. Refill the reservoirs with fresh DOT 4 fluid to the recommended level. Keep the cap off only briefly while working; top up often during the procedure to avoid drawing air into the system.
Step 3 – Prepare bleeder lines and catch bottle
Fit clear plastic tubing over the bleeder nipple on the caliper (or wheel cylinder). Place the other end into a catch bottle partially filled with a bit of fresh fluid to prevent air re-entry. If using a vacuum bleeder, attach to the reservoir or bleeder nipple per tool instructions.
Step 4 – Bleeding order
Standard sequence for Outlander MAX 1000 models is furthest wheel from the master cylinder first, then move closer. Typical order: rear passenger wheel, rear driver wheel, front passenger wheel, front driver wheel. If unsure, follow the master cylinder port markings or the service manual sequence.
Step 5 – Manual pedal or lever bleed
- Partner method: Have an assistant slowly depress the brake lever/pedal 3-5 times then hold it depressed.
- Open the bleeder valve about 1/4 turn to let fluid and air escape into the tubing until flow is clear, then close valve before the assistant releases the lever/pedal.
- Repeat until no air bubbles are visible and the fluid runs clear. Keep master cylinder filled to prevent new air intake.
- Work quickly but carefully; do not allow the reservoir to run dry.
Step 6 – Vacuum or pressure bleeder method (recommended)
Attach vacuum bleeder to bleeder nipple or pressure bleeder to reservoir as tool instructions direct. Draw fluid through until clear and bubble-free, topping the reservoir as needed. This method is cleaner and reduces the chance of introducing air.
Step 7 – Final reservoir fill & cap
Once all four corners are bled and clear, fill each reservoir to the proper level with DOT 4. Reinstall the diaphragms and caps securely. Wipe any spilled fluid from paint and plastics immediately and rinse with water if necessary.
Step 8 – Test
- With the engine off, pump the brake lever/pedal to build firm pressure. The lever should feel solid – no sponginess.
- Start the ATV and re-test at low speed in a safe area. Confirm braking is strong and consistent on both front and rear circuits.
Notes specific to the 2017 Can-Am Outlander MAX 1000 XT-P
- The XT-P package commonly includes heavier-duty components and aftermarket-style plastics that can mask fluid drips; clean and inspect mounting areas after bleeding.
- The Outlander MAX 1000 uses separate front and rear master cylinders. Maintain both reservoirs during the bleed so no circuit runs dry.
- If your model has factory ABS, the ABS modulator may trap air. An ABS-compatible scan tool or the dealer procedure may be required to cycle the pump and purge the unit. If you cannot obtain a firm pedal after conventional bleeding, have the ABS system serviced.
- Brake caliper bleeder sizes and bleeder valve locations vary slightly by production run. Inspect caliper area so you do not damage hoses or ABS sensor wires during the procedure.
- After heavy use in water or mud & especially after trail riding, re-inspect fluid level and bleed if the lever becomes soft. Heat and contamination from trail ingress accelerate fluid degradation.
Maintenance tips
- Replace brake fluid every 1-2 years in regular use or sooner if color darkens or water contamination is suspected.
- Always use sealed, unopened DOT 4 fluid and avoid containers left open to air.
- Keep a service log noting fluid change date and brake pad condition checks.
Troubleshooting
- Persistent soft lever after bleeding: re-check reservoir level, repeat bleed, inspect for damaged hoses, leaking calipers, or ABS unit air entrapment.
- Leaking bleeder nipple: tighten lightly; replace nipple if corroded or stripped.
- Uneven braking: ensure both circuits bled properly and calipers slide freely; inspect pads and rotors for contamination or uneven wear.
If you prefer a faster, cleaner job or suspect ABS-related issues, MotoSport recommends using a pressure bleeder or scheduling service with a certified tech. Proper brake maintenance keeps your Outlander MAX 1000 XT-P safe and responsive on every ride.
