This MotoSport guide walks you through bleeding and replacing the brake fluid on a 2015 Polaris Sportsman 325 ETX safely and effectively. Follow these steps carefully, use proper PPE, and consult your factory service manual for model-specific torque values and diagrams.
Overview & notes specific to the 2015 Sportsman 325 ETX
- The Sportsman 325 ETX uses a hydraulic brake system that shares a small reservoir; Polaris recommends DOT 4 brake fluid. Confirm the spec in your owner’s manual before starting.
- There is no wheel ABS system on this model, so bleeding is straightforward hydraulic bleeding of calipers/wheel cylinders.
- Brake components on this machine are exposed to mud & water when used off-road. Inspect lines, banjo bolts, bleed screws, and rubber hoses for corrosion, cracking, swelling, or contamination before reassembly.
- Replace banjo crush washers whenever you remove a banjo fitting. Old washers can leak or introduce air.
- The brake reservoir capacity is small — keep the cap on and top off frequently during bleeding to avoid drawing new air into the system.
Tools & supplies
- DOT 4 brake fluid (fresh, unopened)
- Clear plastic tubing (fits over bleeder nipple)
- Brake-fluid-safe catch bottle
- Wrenches for bleeder nipples and banjo bolts (factory sizes vary)
- Vacuum bleeder or two-person helper
- Clean rags, safety glasses, nitrile gloves
- Brake cleaner, small brush
- New crush washers for banjo bolts (recommended)
- Service manual or torque spec sheet
Preparation
- Park on a level surface, set the parking brake, and disconnect the spark plug cap for safety.
- Clean around the brake fluid reservoir cap to prevent contamination when opened. Remove cap & diaphragm cover plate.
- Check and note current fluid color. Dark, contaminated fluid should be replaced.
- Jack or support the ATV so wheels can spin freely if you will operate the brakes during bleeding. Stabilize the machine to prevent tipping.
Bleeding strategy & sequence
Always start bleeding at the wheel farthest from the master cylinder and finish at the closest. For the Sportsman layout, this generally means: rear right, rear left, front right, front left. Confirm which wheel is farthest from the master cylinder on your machine before beginning.
Two proven methods
Method A Two-person manual bleed (recommended if you have a helper)
- Fill reservoir to the MAX line with DOT 4 fluid. Keep the cap loosely placed so it’s not airtight.
- Attach clear tubing to the bleeder nipple and place the other end into a catch bottle partially filled with fresh fluid to prevent air re-entry.
- Helper slowly depresses the brake pedal or lever several times and holds it down. You must open the bleeder nipple (about 1/4 turn) to let fluid and bubbles out, then close it before the helper releases the pedal to avoid drawing air back in.
- Repeat the press-open-close cycle until no air bubbles appear in the tubing and the expelled fluid is clean and at expected color.
- Top reservoir frequently to keep fluid above the MIN line. Do not let it run dry.
- Torque bleeder nipples to factory spec when finished at each wheel, clean up any fluid, and move to the next wheel in sequence.
Method B Vacuum or pressure bleeder (single tech)
- Attach vacuum bleeder hose to bleeder nipple or attach pressure bleeder to the reservoir per tool instructions.
- Open bleeder nipple and draw fluid until clear, bubble-free fluid appears, then close nipple before stopping the vacuum.
- If using a pressure bleeder on the reservoir, pressurize only to the tool’s recommended value, open each bleeder in sequence until clean fluid flows, then close each bleeder before depressurizing the reservoir.
- Maintain reservoir level during the process.
Replacing all brake fluid (full system flush)
- Start with the reservoir topped off. Bleed the furthest wheel until fluid runs clear.
- Repeat at each wheel in sequence, ensuring reservoir stays filled to prevent air intake.
- When all wheels are clear, pump the brake lever/pedal slowly several times; check for firm feel. If spongy, repeat bleeding at wheels where air may remain.
- Clean the reservoir area and reinstall cap and diaphragm. Wipe any spilled fluid from painted surfaces and wipe with fresh water if accidental contact occurred.
Inspection & reassembly
- Check for leaks at banjo bolts, bleeder nipples, and hose connections after bleeding. Tighten to factory specs if needed.
- Replace any corroded or damaged bleeder screws, hoses, or lines. Use new crush washers on banjo fittings.
- Dispose of old brake fluid per local hazardous-waste rules. Do not reuse or mix with other fluids.
- Test ride at low speed in a safe area to verify braking performance before normal use.
Troubleshooting
- If brakes remain soft after thorough bleeding, inspect master cylinder and calipers for internal leaks or worn seals. These will require rebuild or replacement.
- Persistent air can indicate a cracked hose or loose connection. Pressurize the system and look for bubbles or fluid seepage.
- If fluid contamination returns quickly, check for a deteriorating rubber hose or reservoir contamination source.
Safety reminders
- Brake fluid damages paint & plastics. Clean spills immediately with a damp rag and brake cleaner if needed.
- Always use fresh, unopened brake fluid from a sealed container. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time — do not use old fluid.
- Wear eye protection and gloves. Work in a well-ventilated area and follow local disposal laws for contaminated fluids.
Following this MotoSport-specific procedure will keep the 2015 Polaris Sportsman 325 ETX braking system safe and responsive. When in doubt, refer to the factory service manual or contact a certified Polaris technician for repairs beyond standard bleeding.
