This MotoSport proprietary guide walks you through safely flushing and bleeding the brake system on a 2015 Can-Am Renegade 1000 (MMY: CAN_AM;REN1000;2015). Follow every step carefully & work clean to avoid contamination of components. Use proper PPE and dispose of old fluid responsibly.
What you need
- DOT 4 brake fluid (manufacturer specifies DOT 4)
- Clear bleed tubing & catch bottle
- Wrench to fit caliper bleed nipples (typically 8 mm)
- Phillips or flat screwdriver for reservoir cap
- Turkey baster or fluid syringe (for reservoir cleaning)
- Shop rags, gloves, eye protection
- Optional: hand vacuum/pressure bleeder or two-person helper
Model notes — what Renegade 1000 owners should know
- The 2015 Renegade 1000 uses DOT 4 brake fluid. Never mix DOT 3 or DOT 5 silicone fluid with DOT 4.
- Some Renegade variants may have ABS or additional sensors; if your unit has ABS, follow ABS-specific bleed procedures in the service manual and be cautious when using pressure bleeders to avoid forcing fluid into ABS module ports.
- Reservoir location: handlebar-mounted master cylinder reservoir feeds both front and rear circuits. Keep the cap and diaphragm clean to prevent contamination.
- Brake lines run to dual front calipers and a single rear caliper. The furthest caliper from the master cylinder is bled first.
- If your Renegade has aftermarket brake components, check fittings and banjo bolts for new torque specs and new crush washers before reassembly.
Preparation
- Park on level ground, chock wheels, and remove the key. Elevate the machine if needed so wheels can rotate freely.
- Clean the reservoir cap area thoroughly. Remove cap and diaphragm slowly to avoid introducing dirt.
- Use a turkey baster to remove old fluid from the reservoir until level is low but not empty. Refill with fresh DOT 4 to a marked level.
- Locate bleed nipples: usually rear caliper and both front calipers. Identify the one farthest from the master cylinder to start.
Bleed sequence – general rule
Always bleed the caliper farthest from the master cylinder first, then move progressively closer. For the Renegade 1000 this commonly means: rear caliper first, then passenger-side/front right, then driver-side/front left. Confirm by visually tracing hose routing on your machine.
Manual (two-person) bleeding method
- With reservoir full, have a helper pump the brake lever/pedal 3–5 times and hold firm.
- Open the bleed nipple a half turn, allow fluid and air to flow into the clear tubing & catch bottle. Close nipple before helper releases the lever.
- Repeat until fluid runs clear and no air bubbles appear. Keep reservoir topped between cycles.
- Move to the next caliper in sequence and repeat.
- After final caliper is bled, pump the lever/pedal to check firmness. Re-check reservoir level and secure cap & diaphragm.
Single-person or pressure/vacuum bleeder method
- If using a pressure bleeder, follow unit instructions and clamp pressure to recommended levels. If using vacuum on the bleed nipple, draw fluid steadily until bubbles stop.
- Maintain reservoir level and avoid running dry. Use the same caliper sequence as above.
- After bleeding, cycle the brakes and check pedal/lever firmness. If spongy, repeat bleeding until firm.
Finishing steps
- Torque bleed nipples and any banjo bolts to factory specs if replacing hardware; replace crushed washers where applicable.
- Clean any spilled brake fluid immediately — it damages plastics and paint. Wipe components with a damp rag and rinse if necessary.
- Properly dispose of used brake fluid according to local hazardous waste rules.
- Road test at low speed to confirm braking performance. Re-check for leaks after the test.
Troubleshooting
- Persistent spongy lever after repeated bleeding: check master cylinder seals, check for soft lines or internal ABS contamination.
- Brake lever goes to the bar: suspect internal leak in master cylinder or a collapsed line — inspect and replace components as needed.
- If ABS-equipped and problems persist, professional diagnostic with ABS bleed tool may be required.
Following this MotoSport-specific procedure will keep your 2015 Can-Am Renegade 1000 brakes performing safely and reliably. When in doubt about ABS, master cylinder condition, or unusual symptoms, consult a qualified mechanic or MotoSport service personnel.
