This MotoSport guide shows you how to properly replace and bleed the brake fluid on a 2014 Honda Rancher 420 4X4 AT (TRX420R4AT). Follow these steps to restore firm pedal/lever feel, extend component life, and keep braking performance consistent. Read all steps before beginning and work methodically.
What you’ll need
- DOT 3 brake fluid (Honda recommends DOT 3; DOT 4 is acceptable if specified by Honda)
- Clear vinyl tubing sized to fit the bleeder nipples
- Small catch bottle and disposable rags
- Wrenches to fit bleeder nuts (open-end or box), typically 8mm or 10mm
- Brake bleeder kit or vacuum pump (optional, but speeds process)
- Assistant (for manual bench or pedal/lever bleeding) or a pressure/ vacuum bleeder
- Rubber gloves, eye protection, and a clean funnel or syringe
- Brake cleaner and container for old fluid disposal
Safety & preparation
- Work on a level surface with the engine off and ignition key removed.
- Avoid spilling brake fluid on painted surfaces – it damages paint. Clean any spills immediately with water.
- Brake fluid is hygroscopic — once opened it absorbs moisture. Use fresh, sealed fluid and discard old fluid properly.
- Wear gloves and eye protection. Keep children & pets away from used fluid.
Model notes for the 2014 Rancher 420 4X4 AT
- The Rancher 420 uses separate master cylinders for front and rear braking circuits: the front master at the handlebar (lever), and the rear master at or near the foot pedal. Treat each circuit independently.
- This model does not have ABS; bleeding uses conventional bleeder screws on each caliper.
- The rear brake pedal may have a reservoir located near the brake pedal bracket — top up only from the correct reservoir when servicing that circuit.
- The brake system is a hydraulic design — stick to DOT-rated fluids compatible with Honda components.
- Service interval: inspect fluid annually and replace if dark, contaminated, or if moisture is suspected. A full fluid replacement every 1-2 years is recommended for recreational use.
Step 1 – Access reservoirs & clean
- Locate the front master cylinder reservoir at the handlebar and the rear reservoir near the foot brake assembly.
- Clean around caps with a rag to prevent contamination. Remove caps and diaphragm plates, leaving them exposed but protected from dirt.
- Top reservoirs to the minimum recommended level with fresh DOT 3 fluid to avoid drawing air in while you bleed.
Step 2 – Decide bleeding method
- Manual pump bleeding requires a helper: they pump the lever/pedal while you open/close bleeders.
- Vacuum or pressure bleeders let a single tech complete the job and reduce contamination risk. Either is acceptable for the Rancher.
Step 3 – Bleeding order
Bleed the circuit starting from the caliper farthest from its master cylinder and finish with the closest caliper. For the Rancher 420, typical order:
- Front circuit: far right or left caliper first depending on layout — follow farthest from handlebar master cylinder, finish at closest.
- Rear circuit: farthest rear caliper first, finish at the caliper closest to rear master cylinder/pedal.
Step 4 – Manual bench bleeding (if replacing fluid entirely)
- Remove reservoir cap and draw out old fluid using a syringe or siphon until mostly empty.
- Refill with fresh fluid to the recommended level. Pump the lever/pedal several times to move fresh fluid into lines.
- Begin bleeding at the farthest caliper: attach clear tubing to bleeder nipple, place other end in catch bottle partly filled with fluid to prevent air entry.
- Have an assistant slowly squeeze the lever or press the pedal several times, then hold pressure. While held, open the bleeder about 1/4 turn to allow fluid & air to escape; close before the assistant releases pressure. Repeat until clear, bubble-free fluid flows and lever/pedal feel improves.
- Keep reservoir topped-up during the process to avoid introducing air back into the master cylinder.
- Repeat for each caliper in the correct order.
Step 5 – Vacuum or pressure bleeding (single-person)
- Attach the vacuum kit to the bleeder nipple, or pressurize the reservoir following the bleeder kit instructions (never pressurize beyond manufacturer recommendations).
- Open the bleeder and draw fluid until the line runs clear of bubbles. Close bleeder, move to next caliper.
- Monitor reservoir level & do not let it run dry.
Step 6 – Final checks
- When all calipers are bled and fluid is clear, tighten bleeder screws securely but do not over-torque. Wipe off any spilled fluid and reinstall reservoir diaphragms & caps.
- Test lever/pedal firmness with the engine off. Expect a firm feel; if soft, repeat bleeding sequence.
- Start the engine and test brakes at low speed in a safe area to confirm braking performance.
- Dispose of old brake fluid per local hazardous-waste regulations.
Troubleshooting & tips
- Persistent soft lever/pedal after proper bleeding may indicate a leak, collapsed hose, or faulty master cylinder/caliper seal — inspect lines, fittings, and caliper pistons.
- If you see foamy fluid in the reservoir, air remains in the system — continue bleeding.
- Replace flexible brake hoses periodically if cracked or swollen; old hoses trap air and degrade braking feel.
- Record fluid change date and mileage/hours for future maintenance.
When to seek professional help
- If you find leaks you can’t correct, damaged calipers/master cylinders, or persistent sponginess after repeated bleeding, have the system inspected and repaired by a professional.
- Brake system work is critical for safety — if unsure, have MotoSport-trained techs or a qualified shop perform the service.
Following this MotoSport procedure will keep your 2014 Honda Rancher 420 4X4 AT brakes performing reliably. Replace fluid regularly, keep components clean, and inspect for leaks to maintain safe riding.
