This MotoSport guide walks through safely flushing and bleeding the brake system on a 2012 Honda Rancher 420 4X4 ES (FE1). Follow these steps precisely. If you are not confident working with hydraulic systems, have a qualified technician perform the work.

Tools & supplies

  • Honda-specified brake fluid (use DOT 3 unless your owner's manual specifies otherwise)
  • Clear hose that fits the bleed nipples
  • Catch bottle, fresh clean container
  • Brake bleeder wrench or proper-sized open-end wrench
  • Turkey baster or syringe for reservoir fluid removal
  • Torque wrench for reassembly where applicable
  • Clean shop rags, nitrile gloves, eye protection
  • Jack, stands or ramps to safely support the ATV
  • Assistant for manual bleeding (recommended)

Model-specific notes for the 2012 Honda Rancher 420 4X4 ES (FE1)

  • The Rancher 420 ES uses separate front and rear hydraulic circuits with a handlebar master cylinder for the front and a rear master cylinder near the foot controls. Verify both reservoirs before beginning.
  • Bleed nipples on calipers and rear master are small; avoid stripping by using the correct wrench and light force.
  • The FE1 electrical shift model has weight & wiring near the rear master assemblyprotect any connectors and wiring harnesses from spilled fluid.
  • DOT fluid will damage paint and plastics. Immediately wipe spills and rinse with water if contamination occurs.
  • If brakes feel spongy after bleeding, repeat procedure and consider a pressure or vacuum bleeder or a professional inspection for worn components.

Preparation

  1. Park ATV on level ground, engine off, key removed, parking brake set. Support securely on stands so wheels can be rotated if needed.
  2. Clean the area around each reservoir cap and bleed nipple to prevent contamination.
  3. Remove reservoir caps and diaphragms; keep caps loosely in place to reduce dirt entry while allowing air escape.
  4. Use a turkey baster to remove most old fluid from reservoirs; do not reuse removed fluid.

Fluid replacement & bleeding procedure (manual, two-person)

  1. Top each reservoir with fresh DOT 3 fluid to the specified level but do not overfill.
  2. Start with the brake circuit farthest from the master cylinder. For many Rancher setups this is the right front caliper, then left front, then rear. Confirm which circuit is farthest on your bike and follow that order.
  3. Fit clear hose over bleed nipple and place other end into a catch bottle partially filled with fresh fluid to prevent air re-entry.
  4. Have your assistant slowly pump the brake lever/pedal several times and then hold firm pressure.
  5. Open the bleed nipple about 1/4 turn; observe fluid and bubbles leaving into bottle. Close nipple before the assistant releases pressure. Repeat until fluid runs clear with no bubbles.
  6. Top off reservoir as needed during the process to prevent air from entering master cylinder.
  7. Work methodically through each wheel/circuit in the correct order. After all circuits are clear, perform a final pass from nearest to farthest to ensure system is air-free.
  8. Tighten bleed nipples to specified torque (light torque if no spec available) and wipe dry all fittings.

Alternative: Vacuum or pressure bleeder

Use a vacuum or pressure bleeder to speed the job and reduce helper needs. Attach according to tool instructions, keep reservoirs topped, and run until clear fluid with no bubbles exits each bleed port. Take care not to over-pressurize reservoirs.

Final checks

  • Ensure reservoir levels are at manufacturer marks; reinstall caps and diaphragms.
  • Operate brake lever and pedal to confirm firm, consistent feel. There should be minimal travel and no sponginess.
  • Inspect lines, fittings, calipers and master for leaks while applying pressure.
  • Test ride at low speed in a safe area to confirm braking performance before regular use.

Maintenance tips & warnings

  • Brake fluid is hygroscopic; replace every 24 months or sooner if contaminated or dark. Fresh fluid ensures corrosion prevention and optimal boiling point.
  • Use only the specified DOT rating. Mixing different DOT types changes performance and can damage seals.
  • If repeated bleeding cannot remove sponginess, inspect master cylinders, caliper pistons, flexible hoses and wheel cylinders for internal leaks or degradation.
  • Keep brake fluid off painted surfaces & plastics. Clean spills immediately with water; do not use solvents on painted finishes.
  • Record the service in your maintenance log; owners of the FE1 model often find periodic inspection of bleed nipples and hoses prevents hard-to-diagnose failures in wet or winter riding conditions.
