This MotoSport guide walks you through safely draining, flushing, and bleeding the brake system on a 2010 Honda Rancher 420 4X4 Power Steering (FM2). Procedures are written for the TRX420R4XP family of machines but are proprietary to MotoSport and tailored to common field and shop conditions.
Safety & preliminary notes
- Work on a cool machine on a flat surface. Block wheels and use a jack with stands if wheels must be removed.
- Brake fluid is hygroscopic and corrosive to paint and plastics. Wear nitrile gloves and eye protection. Keep rags and isopropyl alcohol handy for cleanup.
- Check the master cylinder cap and service manual for the specified fluid. Most 2010 Rancher 420 models use DOT 3 brake fluid on the brake reservoir cap label; verify before filling. If unsure, consult the owner's manual or the reservoir cap marking.
- Do not mix brake fluid types. Replace with fresh, sealed DOT 3 (or the type indicated by the cap/manual) only.
- Dispose of old fluid per local regulations; do not pour down drains.
Tools & supplies
- Fresh DOT 3 brake fluid (one small bottle, 250-500 ml)
- Clear plastic tubing that fits bleeder nipples
- Catch bottle or jar and a small clamp to retain tubing on nipple
- Open-end wrench for bleeder nipples (typically 8mm on Rancher calipers)
- Suction pump or manual brake bleeder (optional for one-person bleeding)
- Clean rags, isopropyl alcohol, gloves, safety glasses
- Torque wrench for caliper bolts if removing wheels/calipers (refer to Honda spec sheet)
System layout & order of bleeding
The 2010 Rancher 420 uses a single front/rear hydraulic brake circuit arranged so that the recommended bleeding order is:
- Farthest wheel from master cylinder first (typically right front)
- Then left front
- Then right rear
- Then left rear
If your machine has a combined master cylinder feeding front & rear via proportioning, follow the above order to ensure trapped air is purged.
Step-by-step: full flush & bleed
- Clean the master cylinder reservoir area. Remove cap and diaphragm. Siphon or absorb old fluid from reservoir until fluid level is low but not empty.
- Top reservoir with fresh DOT 3 fluid to the fill line. Keep cap loosely on but not sealed to avoid pressure build-up while working.
- Start at the farthest caliper (right front). Place catch bottle and attach clear tubing to the bleeder nipple. Submerge the other end in a little fresh fluid in the bottle to prevent air drawback.
- With an assistant: have them slowly depress the brake pedal 3-5 times and hold it down. Loosen the bleeder nipple about 1/4 turn until fluid and air bubble flow into the tubing. Tighten the nipple. Have assistant release the pedal. Repeat until no air bubbles appear and clear fluid flows. Keep reservoir topped up between cycles.
- If working solo: use a vacuum or pressure bleeder. With a vacuum bleeder on the bleeder nipple, have the pedal cycled once and held while vacuum pulls fluid until clear; then tighten the nipple. Or use a one-way bleed kit to pump and draw fluid through without letting air back in.
- Move to the next wheel following the bleeding order. Repeat steps at each bleeder until all lines expel clear, bubble-free fluid.
- After all four calipers are done, perform a final pass on each caliper to ensure firmness in the pedal. Check fluid level and top to the fill line, then install cap and diaphragm securely.
- Operate the brake lever/pedal multiple times with the engine off to confirm firm lever/pedal feel and no sponginess. If spongy, repeat bleeding sequence.
Tips & troubleshooting
- Keep the reservoir level above the minimum at all times during bleeding to avoid drawing air into the master cylinder.
- If you suspect internal master cylinder air or contamination, remove and bench-bleed the master cylinder or replace it. Bench-bleeding may be required to restore proper pedal feel.
- Stubborn air pockets: raise the machine slightly at the end to help move trapped air to calipers; cycle the brake while doing so and re-bleed.
- If the pedal goes to the floor and won't build pressure after multiple bleeds, suspect a leak or failed master cylinderinspect lines, hoses, fittings, banjo bolts, and caliper seals.
- Avoid introducing brake cleaner or solvents into fluid. Use isopropyl alcohol only for external cleaning of fluid spills.
Model-specific notes for the 2010 Rancher 420 4X4 POWER STEERING (FM2)
- The Rancher 420 FM2 (TRX420R4XP) features power steering that uses a separate system and reservoir; do not confuse PS fluid with brake fluid. Power steering issues will not be corrected by brake fluid service.
- Factory bleeder nipple sizes are compactuse an 8mm wrench or box-end to avoid rounding. Keep replacement bleeder screws on hand if corroded.
- Some Rancher units have aftermarket ABS or integrated proportioning devicesif your unit has any extra control units, bleeding procedures may differ; consult your parts/repair documents before proceeding.
- If you remove wheels or calipers, inspect pads, rotor condition, and guide pin lubrication. Replace pads if less than 2 mm friction material remains or if contamination from old fluid occurred.
- OEM Honda caliper mounting bolt torque and banjo bolt torque should be observed when reassembling. If you don't have torque specs available, tighten to a firm factory feel and consult service data before final road testing.
Final checks & road test
- Ensure all bleeder nipples are tight, the reservoir cap is secure, and there are no leaks.
- With the engine off, confirm a firm, consistent pedal feel. Then perform a low-speed test in a safe area to verify braking performance and no fluid leaks under load.
- Re-check fluid level after the initial test ride and top if needed. Inspect for leaks again after 24 hours of use.
