This MotoSport proprietary guide walks you through a full brake fluid change and bleed on the 2008 Kawasaki Brute Force 650 4X4 with the solid rear axle. Follow these steps carefully to restore firm pedal/lever feel and protect the braking system from corrosion or moisture-related failure.

What you need

  • DOT 4 brake fluid (Kawasaki recommends DOT 4; do not mix with DOT 5 silicone fluid)
  • Clear plastic hose to fit bleeder nipples
  • Catch bottle and a few inches of clean clear tubing for overflow
  • Open-end wrenches sized for caliper bleeder nipples (typically 8 mm or 10 mm)
  • Turkey baster or fluid syringe to remove old fluid from reservoirs
  • Clean rags and brake cleaner
  • Jack or stands to lift the machine safely and wheel chocks
  • Gloves and eye protection

Model-specific notes for the 2008 Brute Force 650

  • The Brute Force uses DOT 4 fluid in its hydraulic system. Always use fresh DOT 4 and keep the reservoir sealed when not working.
  • There are separate front and rear circuits: the front master is at the handlebar lever(s) and the rear master is foot-operated. Treat each system independently unless you detect a shared reservoir or cross-feed (uncommon).
  • Solid rear axle models have a single rear caliper; front brakes are dual calipers. Bleed the rear and each front caliper individually following the farthest-first rule from each master cylinder.
  • Some Brute Force models may have anti-lock hardware or combined brake systems. If your machine has ABS/electronic components, see the ABS note below before proceeding.

Safety & prep

  • Work on a level surface. Immobilize the machine and remove the key.
  • Wear eye protection & gloves. Brake fluid is corrosive to painted surfacescover nearby paint and immediately rinse spills with water.
  • Keep the reservoir cap clean and open it only when ready to add or remove fluid to avoid contamination.

Step-by-step procedure

1. Inspect & identify

Locate the front and rear master cylinder reservoirs and identify each caliper's bleeder nipple. Clean around the reservoir caps and bleeder nipples before opening.

2. Remove old fluid from reservoirs

Use a turkey baster or syringe to remove as much old fluid as possible from each reservoir. Dispose of fluid properly. Refill reservoirs with fresh DOT 4 fluid to just below the max mark to avoid overflowing during bleeding.

3. Lift the ATV & remove wheels if necessary

Raise the wheels off the ground so calipers are accessible and the wheels can turn freely if you need to actuate brakes with a helper.

4. Bleed order principle

Always begin bleeding at the caliper farthest from the corresponding master cylinder and work to the closest. For the Brute Force 650:

  • Rear system (single rear caliper): bleed the rear caliper.
  • Front system (handlebar master): typically bleed the right/front-right caliper first if it is farthest from the master, then the left/front-left. Confirm which is farthest visually and follow that order.

5. One-person or two-person method

Two-person method (recommended):

  1. Attach clear hose to the bleeder nipple and submerge the other end in a small container partially filled with fresh fluid to prevent air from being drawn back in.
  2. Have a helper slowly apply steady pressure to the brake lever or pedal until firm, then hold it.
  3. Open the bleeder nipple about a 1/4 turn. Fluid and air will flow into the tubing. Close the nipple before the helper releases the lever/pedal. Repeat until clear, bubble-free fluid emerges.
  4. Keep the reservoir topped up between cycles so the master cylinder never runs dry.

One-person vacuum or pressure bleed option:

  • Use a hand vacuum pump or pressure bleeder following the manufacturer's instructions. A vacuum pump pulls fluid out at the bleeder; a pressure bleeder pumps fluid into the reservoir under low pressure to push old fluid out. Both avoid needing a helper but use caution to avoid over-pressurizing any system.

6. Finish each circuit

Once the line at a caliper is clear, tighten the bleeder nipple to spec snugness (do not overtighten), wipe away residue, and cap if applicable. Move to the next caliper in the bleed order. When done, pump the lever/pedal gently to check for firm response.

7. Final reservoir fill & cleanup

Top reservoirs to the correct level, clean around the caps, and re-install caps. Clean any fluid spills from paint or plastic immediately with water and brake cleaner if needed. Properly dispose of old brake fluid per local regulations.

ABS & electrical system note

If your Brute Force has an ABS unit or electronic brake components, bleeding may require cycling procedures or a diagnostic tool to activate ABS pump valves to clear trapped air. If you suspect ABS or you cannot achieve firm pedal feel after standard bleeding, stop and consult a MotoSport tech or a Kawasaki dealerforcing ABS components can introduce air pockets that are hard to remove without specialty service.

Troubleshooting

  • Spongy lever/pedal after bleeding: likely air remained in the system or master cylinder was allowed to run dry. Repeat bleeding sequence and ensure reservoirs remain topped up.
  • Brake drag after bleeding: check caliper pins and slide hardware for proper lubrication and movement, and ensure bleeder nipple is tightened.
  • Persistent fade or contamination: if fluid appears dark or contaminated after multiple flushes, repeat full flush until clean or consider replacing calipers/hoses if internal contamination is suspected.

Maintenance intervals & recommendations

  • Replace brake fluid every 1-2 years or sooner if fluid appears dark or if you ride in wet conditions frequently.
  • Check lines, hoses, and fittings for cracks, swelling, or leaks during each fluid service. Replace any suspect parts immediately.
  • Use only fresh DOT 4 from sealed containers and always keep caps secured while not servicing.

MotoSport service tip

When replacing hoses, calipers, or master cylinder parts, use OEM or MotoSport-tested replacement components matched to the 2008 Kawasaki Brute Force 650 to retain original performance and fitment. If unsure about ABS or combined brake systems on your unit, contact MotoSport tech support for model-specific guidance before proceeding.

Perform a careful road-test at low speed in a controlled area to confirm braking performance before normal riding.
