This MotoSport guide gives a step-by-step, shop-tested procedure to replace and bleed the brake fluid on a 2001 Honda TRX250 RECON (MMY). Follow safety precautions, use the recommended DOT fluid, and take care around the Recon's exposed brake linkages and drum hardware.

Tools & supplies

  • DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid (check cap for spec) fresh, unopened bottle
  • Clear plastic tubing that fits snugly over the bleed nipple
  • Catch bottle for old fluid
  • Wrenches for bleed nipples and banjo fittings (open-end or flare)
  • Phillips/flat screwdriver, pliers
  • Brake cleaner spray
  • Rags and a disposable tray
  • Protective gloves and eye protection
  • Assistant to operate brake lever/pedal, or a one-man vacuum or pressure bleeder

Model-specific notes for the 2001 TRX250 RECON

  • The TRX250 RECON uses a master cylinder with a small plastic reservoir near the handlebars and a rear master reservoir near the rear brake pedal depending on model year variations. Always confirm which reservoir feeds which circuit before starting.
  • Many Recon models are drum-brake equipped at the wheels with hydraulic wheel cylinders. Drum wheel cylinders can hold old fluid and corrosion; inspect drums and shoes while you have components exposed.
  • Banjo fittings and soft copper crush washers are common on the Recon brake lines. Replace crushed washers if disturbed and torque to a snug factory feel; do not overtighten.
  • DOT fluid will damage paint and plastics used on the Recon. Wipe spills immediately and cover plastic panels while working.

Safety first

  • Work on a level surface with the engine off and the key removed.
  • Wear eye protection and gloves. Brake fluid is corrosive to skin and paint.
  • Keep the reservoir cap closed except when adding fluid to minimize moisture contamination.
  • Dispose of old fluid responsibly per local regulations.

Preparation

  1. Clean the reservoir cap area thoroughly to prevent dirt from entering the system when opened.
  2. Remove the reservoir cap and diaphragm. Note fluid level and color. If fluid is dark or gritty, full replacement is required.
  3. Top reservoir to the recommended level with fresh DOT fluid. Do not reuse fluid already drained from the system.
  4. Locate bleed nipples at the wheel cylinders (drum) or calipers (if present). Fit clear tubing over each nipple and submerge the other end in a small catch bottle partially filled with fresh fluid to prevent air re-entry.

Bleeding method A Two-person manual bleed (recommended for reliability)

  1. Have an assistant sit on the seat and slowly apply and hold light pressure on the brake lever or pedal to create system pressure.
  2. With the lever/pedal held, open the bleed nipple one quarter to one half turn to let fluid and air escape into the tubing. Close the nipple before your assistant releases the brake.
  3. Repeat: pump the brake slowly, hold, open nipple to bleed, close nipple, then release. Maintain the reservoir at the correct level throughout. Never let the reservoir go empty.
  4. Continue until clear, bubble-free fluid runs from the nipple and the lever/pedal feel is firm.
  5. Tighten the bleed nipple securely and wipe any spilled fluid. Repeat the procedure for the other wheel circuit if applicable.

Bleeding method B One-person vacuum or pressure bleed

  1. Attach a hand vacuum pump or pressure bleeder to the bleed nipple or reservoir per tool instructions.
  2. If vacuuming, draw fluid slowly while topping the reservoir as necessary. If pressure bleeding, pressurize the reservoir and open the bleed nipple to let fluid flow until clear and bubble-free.
  3. Close bleed nipple and release pressure or remove vacuum when complete. Confirm firm lever/pedal operation.

Complete fluid replacement procedure

  1. Begin bleeding at the wheel farthest from the master cylinder and work toward the master cylinder when multiple circuits exist. For the Recon, this typically means rear first, then front, but confirm the routing on your bike before starting.
  2. Drain all old fluid until clear fluid appears at each bleed nipple. Keep topping the reservoir with new fluid; do not mix new and old in the bottle.
  3. After bleeding each wheel, tighten nipples to a secure snug and wipe clean.
  4. Once all circuits are bled, verify the reservoir is filled to the specified level and reinstall the diaphragm and cap securely.
  5. Operate the brakes several times off the stand to build pressure, then test ride slowly in a safe area to confirm firm, consistent braking.

Inspection & follow-up

  • Check all line fittings and bleed nipple threads for leaks after the test ride and re-torque as necessary.
  • Inspect drum shoes, wheel cylinders, and hardware for wear or contamination; replace wheel cylinders or shoes showing leakage or heavy corrosion.
  • Replace soft copper crush washers when removing banjo bolts or other sealed fittings. Refill and re-bleed if you open those fittings.
  • Record the service date and fluid type in your maintenance log. Brake fluid should be changed periodically according to your usage and MotoSport recommendations.

Troubleshooting

  • Spongy lever/pedal after bleeding: re-check for trapped air; ensure reservoir was never allowed to run dry; inspect lines for internal collapse or damage.
  • Persistent leakage: tighten fittings, replace seals/washers, inspect wheel cylinders for weeping.
  • Brake drag after bleed: ensure bleed nipples fully closed, check return springs and linkages on drum hardware, verify pedal free play adjusted correctly.

Following this MotoSport-exclusive procedure will refresh your Recon's braking performance and extend component life. If you encounter internal master cylinder failure or persistent wheel-cylinder leaks, replace the faulty components with OEM or high-quality aftermarket parts available from MotoSport.
