2024 Honda Trail 125 Brake Bleeding Guide
Shop parts for a 2024 Honda Trail 125 Motorcycle. The 2024 Honda Trail 125 pairs a hydraulic front disc brake with ABS and a simple, durable chassis made for exploring. The front brake is fed by a master cylinder and reservoir on the right handlebar. Check the rear wheel before you begin: a caliper and a second reservoir mean the rear is hydraulic and gets bled too, while a rod running from the pedal to a drum means the rear is mechanical and is adjusted rather than bled.
Signs It’s Time
Brake fluid pulls in moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point and corrodes internal parts, including the ABS components. Fresh fluid keeps the lever firm and the brake consistent on long downhill stretches.
- A soft or spongy lever
- Fluid that looks dark or cloudy
- Long storage periods
- Any recent brake work
Tools and Supplies
- Fresh brake fluid of the type marked on the master cylinder reservoir cap, from a sealed container
- A box-end wrench that fits the bleeder valves
- Clear tubing that fits snugly over the bleeder
- A catch bottle
- A small syringe
- A screwdriver for the reservoir cap
- Rags and water for cleanup
Getting Ready
Get the bike upright and stable on a stand. Turn the bars until the front reservoir is level. Protect painted and plastic parts with rags, because brake fluid damages them. Wipe the reservoir cap clean before opening it.
Bleeding Steps
- Remove the front reservoir cap and diaphragm.
- Pull out most of the old fluid with the syringe without letting the reservoir run dry.
- Refill with fresh fluid.
- Attach the clear tube to the front caliper bleeder and place the free end in the catch bottle.
- Squeeze and hold the lever.
- Open the bleeder about a quarter turn.
- Close the bleeder before releasing the lever.
- Repeat, topping off the reservoir every couple of strokes.
- When clean, bubble-free fluid flows, close the bleeder snugly.
- If your bike has a rear caliper and reservoir, bleed the rear the same way with the foot pedal.
Protect the ABS
Never let the reservoir run low. Air pulled into the master cylinder can reach the ABS hydraulic unit, where a normal caliper bleed may not clear it.
Rear Drum Notes
If your rear brake is a drum, there’s nothing to bleed. Check the pedal free play and adjustment, look at the wear indicator, and confirm the brake releases fully.
Testing Your Work
Fill the reservoir to the correct level, reinstall the diaphragm and cap, and clean up spills. Check for leaks and dispose of the old fluid properly. The lever should feel firm and steady without sinking. Spin the wheels to confirm there’s no drag, check that the ABS light behaves normally, and test both brakes at low speed in a safe area.
When to See a Dealer
If the reservoir ran dry, the ABS unit or its lines were opened, or the brakes won’t firm up, the system may require a dealer-level procedure or diagnostic tool.
