What This Brake System Is and When to Bleed It

The 2024 Ducati Multistrada V4 S uses hydraulic disc brakes at both ends and is equipped with ABS. That means the front lever and rear pedal each push fluid through a hydraulic circuit, and the ABS system is part of that circuit. For routine fluid refresh and air removal at the calipers, a normal bleed through the caliper bleeder valves is generally the right approach. If air has entered the ABS unit itself—for example, because the reservoir ran dry, or because the ABS unit or its lines were disconnected—the bike may need a dealer-level procedure or diagnostic tool, and it should go to a shop rather than being bled at home.

Bleeding is due when the front lever or rear pedal feels spongy, when the lever pulls closer to the grip than it used to, when the fluid in the reservoir looks dark or cloudy, or after any work that opened the hydraulic system, such as new lines, caliper service, or master cylinder work. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point and can contribute to brake fade under hard use. Many riders refresh the fluid on a regular schedule even when the brakes still feel normal, because a system that feels fine can still be carrying old, moisture-contaminated fluid.

Tools and Supplies to Gather

  • Fresh brake fluid of the type marked on the master cylinder reservoir cap, from a sealed container
  • A box-end wrench that fits the bleeder valve
  • A length of clear tubing that fits snugly over the bleeder
  • A catch bottle for the old fluid
  • Rags or shop towels
  • A syringe or turkey baster for removing old fluid from the reservoir
  • A screwdriver or driver that fits the reservoir cap screws
  • Optional: a one-way check-valve bleeder or vacuum bleeder to make one-person bleeding easier

Use only fluid from a sealed container, and do not reuse fluid that has been sitting open or that has been bled out of the system. Keep the work area clean, and have enough rags on hand to catch drips before they reach painted or plastic surfaces.

Preparing the Bike and Protecting Surfaces

Support the 2024 Multistrada V4 S securely upright on a stand so it cannot tip while you are working the lever or pedal. Turn the handlebars so the front reservoir sits level before you open it; a reservoir that is tilted can spill fluid as soon as the cap comes off. Cover painted surfaces, plastics, and the instrument area with rags, because most brake fluids damage paint and plastic on contact. If fluid does spill, wipe it up immediately and rinse the area with water.

Before opening the reservoir, clean around the cap so dirt does not fall into the fluid. Have the catch bottle positioned below the caliper bleeder and route the clear tubing so it will not kink or pull loose. If you are working alone, set up the tubing and bottle first, then make sure you can reach the lever or pedal, the bleeder valve, and the reservoir without stretching or knocking the bike.

Step-by-Step Bleeding Procedure

  1. Open the reservoir and remove most of the old fluid with a syringe or turkey baster. Do not let the reservoir run dry, and do not let old fluid overflow onto the bike.
  2. Refill the reservoir with fresh fluid of the type marked on the cap, leaving room for the diaphragm and cap to be reinstalled later.
  3. Attach the clear tubing to the bleeder valve and route the other end into the catch bottle. Make sure the tubing fits snugly so air cannot be drawn in around it.
  4. For the front brake, squeeze and hold the lever. For the rear brake, press and hold the pedal. Keep steady pressure on it.
  5. Open the bleeder about a quarter turn to let fluid and air escape through the tubing. Watch the tubing for bubbles and for the color of the fluid.
  6. Close the bleeder before releasing the lever or pedal. Releasing first can draw air back into the system.
  7. Repeat the squeeze-hold-open-close-release sequence until fresh, clean, bubble-free fluid comes through the tubing. Keep checking the reservoir and topping it off throughout so it never runs low enough to draw air in.
  8. If the bike has two front calipers, bleed each one in turn. As a general practice, start with the caliper farthest from the master cylinder if the layout makes one clearly farther; otherwise work through them one at a time and do not rush.
  9. Move to the rear brake if it is hydraulic, using the same sequence with the pedal instead of the lever. Keep the rear reservoir topped off as you work.
  10. When clean fluid is coming through and no bubbles remain, close the bleeder snugly without overtightening it. Do not force it.
  11. Fill the reservoir to the correct level marking, reinstall the diaphragm and cap, and clean any spilled fluid from the bike.
  12. Check for leaks at the bleeder and at the banjo fittings before you test the brakes.

Finishing, Testing, and Troubleshooting

After the bleed, the front lever and rear pedal should feel firm and consistent, not spongy, and they should not slowly sink under steady pressure. Spin each wheel to confirm the brakes are not dragging. Test the brakes at low speed in a safe area before riding normally, and make sure the bike stops smoothly and the lever and pedal feel the same on repeated applications.

If the lever will not firm up after several bleeding attempts, if it firms up only after pumping, if bubbles keep appearing, or if fluid is leaking from the master cylinder or caliper, stop and diagnose the problem before riding. A lever that never becomes firm can indicate air still trapped in the system, a worn master cylinder seal, or a leak that needs attention. Any situation where air may have entered the ABS unit is best handled by a shop with the correct procedure and tools. If you are not confident in the result, have the 2024 Ducati Multistrada V4 S inspected before you ride it in traffic.
