Bleeding the Brakes on a 2023 Honda Trail 125
Shop parts for a 2023 Honda Trail 125 Motorcycle. The 2023 Honda Trail 125 is a go-anywhere small-displacement trail bike with a hydraulic front disc brake and ABS. The front brake is fed by a master cylinder and small reservoir on the right handlebar. Look at the rear wheel before you start: if there’s a caliper and a second reservoir, the rear brake is hydraulic and gets bled too. If the foot pedal connects to a drum by a rod, the rear is mechanical and is adjusted instead.
Why Fresh Fluid Matters
Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point and causes internal corrosion. Trail riding, dust, and long descents are hard on brakes, and old fluid can lead to a soft lever and fading stopping power.
- A spongy lever that pulls closer to the grip
- Dark or murky fluid in the reservoir
- A bike that has sat for a long time
- Recent work on the caliper, hose, or master cylinder
Supplies Checklist
- Fresh brake fluid of the type marked on the master cylinder reservoir cap, from a sealed container
- A box-end wrench that fits the bleeder valves
- Clear tubing and a catch bottle
- A small syringe
- A screwdriver for the reservoir cap
- Rags and water for cleanup
Before You Start
Get the bike upright on a stand on level ground. Turn the handlebars until the reservoir sits level. Cover painted and plastic parts with rags, since brake fluid damages them quickly. Clean the reservoir cap before removing it.
Bleeding the System
- Remove the front reservoir cap and diaphragm.
- Draw out most of the old fluid with the syringe without letting the reservoir run dry.
- Refill with fresh fluid.
- Slip the clear tube over the front caliper bleeder and put the other end in the catch bottle.
- Squeeze and hold the lever.
- Open the bleeder about a quarter turn.
- Close the bleeder before releasing the lever.
- Repeat, adding fresh fluid every couple of strokes.
- When clean, bubble-free fluid flows, close the bleeder.
- If your bike has a rear caliper and reservoir, repeat at the rear using the foot pedal.
A Note on ABS
Letting the reservoir run dry is the mistake to avoid. Air drawn into the master cylinder can reach the ABS hydraulic unit, and a standard caliper bleed may not push it out.
If the Rear Is a Drum
A rod-operated rear drum has no fluid to change. Check the pedal adjustment and wear indicator, and make sure the brake releases fully.
Finish the Job Right
Fill the reservoir to the correct level, reinstall the diaphragm and cap, and wipe away spilled fluid. Check for leaks and dispose of the old fluid properly. The lever should be firm and should not slowly sink. Spin both wheels, check that the ABS light behaves normally, and test both brakes at low speed in a safe area before riding normally.
When to Call a Dealer
If the reservoir ran dry, the ABS unit or its lines were disconnected, or the brakes never firm up, the system may require a dealer-level procedure or diagnostic tool.
