Bleeding the Brakes on a 2023 Ducati XDiavel S

The 2023 Ducati XDiavel S uses hydraulic disc brakes at both ends and is equipped with ABS. The front lever and rear pedal operate separate hydraulic circuits, so each end needs its own bleed. For routine fluid replacement and air removal at the calipers, a standard bleed through the caliper bleeders is the correct starting point. The exception is air trapped inside the ABS unit itself. If the reservoir has run dry, or the ABS unit or its lines have been disconnected, the system may need a dealer-level procedure or diagnostic tool, and the bike should go to a shop rather than being bled only at the calipers.

Why and When the XDiavel S Needs a Brake Bleed

A spongy lever or a rear pedal that feels soft is the classic sign that air is in the hydraulic system. A lever that pulls closer to the grip than it used to, or one that slowly sinks while held under steady pressure, also points to air or a fluid problem. Dark, cloudy, or contaminated fluid in the reservoir is another reason to bleed. The job is also due after any work that opened the hydraulic system, such as new brake lines, caliper service, or master cylinder work.

Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time. That lowers its boiling point and can lead to brake fade under hard use, even if the lever still feels acceptable during easy riding. Many riders refresh the fluid on a regular schedule as preventive maintenance, and the XDiavel S is a heavy, fast street bike where consistent brake feel matters. If you are unsure when the fluid was last changed, a bleed is a sensible place to start.

Tools and Supplies to Have Ready

  • Fresh brake fluid of the type marked on the master cylinder reservoir cap, from a sealed container.
  • A box-end wrench that fits the bleeder valve.
  • A length of clear tubing that fits snugly over the bleeder.
  • A catch bottle for old fluid.
  • Rags or shop towels, plus a syringe or turkey baster for removing old fluid from the reservoir.
  • A screwdriver or driver that fits the reservoir cap screws.
  • Optional: a one-way check-valve bleeder or vacuum bleeder to make one-person bleeding easier.

Brake fluid damages paint and many plastics on contact, so keep rags handy and plan to wipe up spills immediately. If fluid reaches a painted or plastic surface, rinse the area with water rather than letting it sit.

Preparing the Bike and Work Area

Support the XDiavel S securely upright on a stand so it cannot tip while you are working the lever or pedal. Turn the handlebars so the front reservoir sits level before you open it. Cover the painted bodywork, the plastic panels, and the instrument area with rags or shop towels. Remove the reservoir cap and diaphragm, then use the syringe or turkey baster to take most of the old fluid out of the reservoir. Leave a little fluid in the bottom so you do not push air into the master cylinder, then top off with fresh fluid.

The Bleeding Procedure, Front and Rear

  1. With the front reservoir filled to the level marking, attach the clear tubing to a front caliper bleeder and route the other end into the catch bottle. Fit the box-end wrench over the bleeder.
  2. Squeeze the front lever slowly and hold it firm. Open the bleeder about a quarter turn and let fluid and air escape through the tube. Close the bleeder before you release the lever. Releasing the lever with the bleeder open can draw air back into the caliper.
  3. Repeat the squeeze, hold, open, close, and release sequence. Check the reservoir often and top it off with fresh fluid so it never runs low enough to draw air in.
  4. Watch the clear tubing. Continue until the fluid coming through is fresh, clean, and free of bubbles. If the XDiavel S has two front calipers, bleed one caliper at a time and repeat the same sequence on the other. As a general rule, start with the caliper farthest from the master cylinder when the layout gives you a clear choice.
  5. Move to the rear brake. Fill the rear reservoir to its level marking, attach the clear tubing to the rear caliper bleeder, and route it to the catch bottle.
  6. Press and hold the rear pedal. Open the rear bleeder about a quarter turn, let fluid and air out, then close the bleeder before releasing the pedal. Repeat until the fluid is clean and bubble-free, topping off the rear reservoir as needed.
  7. Keep the front and rear circuits separate. The XDiavel S uses separate front and rear hydraulic systems, so do not expect one reservoir to feed both ends.
  8. When both ends run clean, close each bleeder snugly without overtightening. Fill each reservoir to the correct level marking, reinstall the diaphragm and cap, and wipe away any spilled fluid.

Finishing, Testing, and Leak Checks

After the caps are back on, check the bleeder valves and the banjo fittings at the master cylinders and calipers for leaks. A dry shop towel wiped around each fitting should stay clean. Spin each wheel by hand to confirm the brakes are not dragging. Then test the brakes at low speed in a safe area before riding normally. The front lever and rear pedal should feel firm and consistent, not spongy, and neither should slowly sink while you hold steady pressure.

Troubleshooting and When to Stop

If the lever or pedal will not firm up after several bleeding attempts, or if it firms only after pumping, air is still in the system or fluid is bypassing internally. Persistent bubbles at the bleeder, fluid leaking from the master cylinder or caliper, or a lever that feels different after the bike sits overnight are reasons to stop and investigate. Any situation where air may have entered the ABS unit, or where the ABS unit or its lines were disconnected, should go to a shop with the correct diagnostic equipment. A brake system that will not hold a firm feel is not safe to ride, so resolve the problem before heading out.
