How to Bleed the Brakes on a 2022 Honda CBR300R ABS

The 2022 Honda CBR300R ABS is a light, approachable sportbike with a single front disc, a rear disc, and ABS. The front caliper is fed by a master cylinder and reservoir on the right handlebar, and the rear caliper has its own master cylinder and reservoir, operated by the foot pedal. Bleeding the fluid at the calipers is straightforward maintenance as long as you keep air out of the ABS.

Why Change the Fluid?

Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point and causes internal corrosion. Even on a small bike, old fluid can lead to a soft lever, longer stopping distances, and sticking pistons. A fresh fill keeps the brakes feeling consistent ride after ride.

  • A soft or spongy lever
  • A rear pedal that feels vague
  • Fluid that has turned dark
  • Recent pad, line, or caliper work

Tools You’ll Need

  • Fresh brake fluid of the type marked on the master cylinder reservoir cap, from a sealed container
  • A box-end wrench that fits the bleeder valves
  • Clear tubing and a catch bottle
  • A syringe or turkey baster
  • A screwdriver or driver for the reservoir caps
  • Rags and water for cleanup

Getting Ready

Put the bike on a rear stand or have a helper hold it upright. Turn the bars until the front reservoir is level. Cover the tank and fairing with rags, because brake fluid damages paint and plastic. Clean around the reservoir caps before opening them.

Bleeding the Brakes

  1. Remove the front reservoir cap and diaphragm.
  2. Remove most of the old fluid with the syringe without letting the reservoir run dry.
  3. Refill with fresh fluid.
  4. Attach the clear tube to the front caliper bleeder and place the free end in the catch bottle.
  5. Squeeze and hold the lever.
  6. Open the bleeder about a quarter turn.
  7. Close the bleeder before releasing the lever.
  8. Repeat, topping off the reservoir every few strokes.
  9. When clean, bubble-free fluid flows through, close the bleeder.
  10. Bleed the rear caliper the same way using the foot pedal and rear reservoir.

A Word on ABS

The most important rule is to keep both reservoirs from running low. If air is drawn into a master cylinder, it can reach the ABS hydraulic unit, and a normal caliper bleed may not clear it. Check the level every few strokes.

Helpful Tips

  • Use slow, full strokes on the lever and pedal.
  • Make sure the bleed tube fits tightly so air can’t sneak back in.
  • Keep fluid away from the discs and pads.
  • Don’t reuse fluid from the catch bottle.

Finish and Test

Tighten the bleeders snugly, fill both reservoirs to their correct level marks, and reinstall the diaphragms and caps. Clean up spills, check for leaks, and dispose of the old fluid properly. The lever and pedal should be firm and should not sink. Spin both wheels, check that the ABS light behaves normally, and test the brakes at low speed in a safe area.

When to Visit a Dealer

If a reservoir ran dry, the ABS unit or its lines were opened, or the brakes stay soft, the system may require a dealer-level procedure or diagnostic tool. An ABS light that stays on is also worth a professional check.
