Brake Bleeding Guide for the 2016 Triumph Trophy SE ABS
Shop parts for a 2016 Triumph Trophy SE ABS Motorcycle. The 2016 Triumph Trophy SE ABS combines a smooth 1200cc triple with hydraulic disc brakes front and rear and ABS. The front circuit runs from the master cylinder and reservoir on the right handlebar to the front caliper bleeders, and the rear circuit runs from a pedal-operated master cylinder with its own reservoir to the rear caliper bleeder. This guide covers a complete flush and bleed of both circuits.
Tools and Supplies
- Fresh brake fluid of the type marked on the reservoir cap, from a sealed container
- A box-end wrench that fits the bleeder valve
- Clear tubing that fits snugly over the bleeder
- A catch bottle
- A syringe or turkey baster
- A screwdriver or driver for the reservoir caps
- Rags or shop towels
- A one-way check-valve bleeder or vacuum bleeder, if working alone
Why Bleed and When
Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point. A fully loaded Trophy descending a long grade puts a lot of heat into its brakes, and old fluid can boil under that load. The vapor it creates compresses, causing a soft lever and fading brakes. Many riders refresh the fluid on a regular schedule even without symptoms.
Bleed soon if:
- The lever feels spongy or pulls closer to the grip than it used to
- The rear pedal feels soft
- The fluid in a reservoir is dark or cloudy
- The system was opened for new brake lines, caliper service, or master cylinder work
Preparation
Support the bike securely upright on its center stand. Turn the handlebars until the front reservoir is level. Cover the tank, fairing, and dash with rags. Most brake fluids damage paint and plastic on contact, so wipe up any spill immediately and rinse with water. Clean the reservoir caps before opening them.
Bleeding the Trophy
- Remove the front reservoir cap and diaphragm.
- Draw out most of the old fluid with the syringe, keeping the reservoir from running dry.
- Refill with fresh fluid.
- Attach the clear tube to the bleeder of the front caliper farthest from the master cylinder, with the other end in the catch bottle.
- Squeeze and hold the lever.
- Open the bleeder about a quarter turn to release fluid and air.
- Close the bleeder before releasing the lever.
- Repeat, topping off the reservoir often so it never runs low enough to draw in air.
- When fresh, clean, bubble-free fluid flows, close the bleeder.
- Bleed the second front caliper, if equipped.
- Bleed the rear caliper the same way using the foot pedal and rear reservoir.
Why the Reservoir Level Matters Most
On an ABS bike, a low reservoir is more than an inconvenience. Air drawn into the master cylinder can travel into the ABS unit, where a normal caliper bleed may not reach it. Check the level after every few strokes and keep it well above the bottom. Use smooth, steady strokes, and make sure the tube fits tightly on the bleeder.
Finishing Up
Tighten each bleeder snugly without overtightening. Fill the reservoirs to the correct level marks, reinstall the diaphragms and caps, and clean away any spilled fluid. Check the bleeders and banjo fittings for leaks, and dispose of the old fluid properly.
Test Before Riding
The lever and pedal should feel firm and consistent, and neither should slowly sink under steady pressure. Spin both wheels to confirm the brakes are not dragging. Test the brakes at low speed in a safe area before riding normally.
When to Visit a Shop
If a reservoir ran dry or the ABS unit or its lines were disconnected, air may have entered the ABS unit, and the system may require a dealer-level procedure or diagnostic tool. Have the bike inspected as well if the lever will not firm up after several attempts, only firms up after pumping, keeps producing bubbles, or if a master cylinder or caliper is leaking.
