When to Clean or Replace Your KLX140 Air Filter
- Clean the air filter after the initial 5 hours of riding or within the first month of ownership.
- After that, clean it every 50 hours or 6 months, whichever comes first.
- If you ride in dusty or sandy conditions, clean the filter more often–sometimes after every ride.
- Replace the air filter whenever you see signs of deterioration, tears, excessive clogging, or loss of flexibility.
Tools & Supplies Needed
- 8mm wrench or T-handle
- Clean, lint-free cloth
- Foam filter cleaner or high flash-point solvent
- Foam-filter oil
- Gloves
How to Remove the KLX140 Air Filter
- Remove the left side cover by unscrewing the bolts (8mm) and gently popping it off.
- Loosen and remove the air box cover bolts, then set the cover aside.
- Unscrew and remove the wing bolt holding the filter element in place.
- Carefully pull out the air filter and its frame.
Cleaning & Re-Oiling the Air Filter
- Separate the foam element from its plastic frame.
- Gently clean the foam element in a bath of foam filter cleaner or high flash-point solvent. Use your hands (not a brush) to avoid tearing the foam.
- Rinse the filter thoroughly, then gently squeeze (do not wring) dry with a clean towel.
- Inspect for tears, worn spots, or damaged seams. Replace if compromised.
- Once dry, saturate the filter with high-quality foam filter oil. Massage the oil through the foam for a uniform coating, but do not oversaturate.
- Wrap the filter in a clean towel to remove excess oil. The filter should be sticky but not dripping.
Reinstallation
- Wipe out any dust or debris from the inside of the air box with a damp cloth.
- If removed, reattach the filter foam to its plastic cage.
- Lightly coat the filter lip and seat with a layer of waterproof grease to ensure a perfect seal and keep dirt out.
- Install the filter and frame back into the air box. Reinstall and tighten the wing bolt snugly–it presses the filter's rim securely against the air box for a dust-tight fit.
- Replace the air box and side covers, ensuring all grommets and bolts are properly seated.
Special Notes for the 2021 KLX140 Owner
- The KLX140 features a backfire screen that provides additional flame protection but can trap fine dust, so inspect regularly and clean thoroughly.
- The air box design has a snorkel inlet–expect most of the dirt to accumulate in one region of the filter.
- Neglecting air filter maintenance is the fastest way for dirt ingestion to shorten engine life. Always check after dusty rides.
