The 2020 KTM 250SXF-FE boasts a user-friendly tool-less air filter system unique to KTM, making regular maintenance quick – no tools required to remove or reinstall the air filter. Keeping the air filter clean & properly oiled is crucial for peak performance, throttle response, and engine longevity, especially during spirited or dusty rides.

Preparation

  • Make sure the bike is on a stable stand in a clean work area.
  • Wear gloves to protect your hands from contact cleaner & oils.

Air Filter Removal

  • Open the left side panel to access the airbox.
  • Locate the filter cage – KTM uses side-entry slots and locking tabs for easy access.
  • Release the tabs – gently pull the filter and cage assembly out. No tools needed, just snap and go.

Cleaning the Air Filter

  • Remove the filter from its plastic cage carefully by releasing the prongs holding it in place.
  • Prepare a tub with the appropriate cleaner. For biodegradable filter oil, use a matching biodegradable cleaner. For petroleum-based oils, use standard air filter cleaner.
  • Drop the filter into the tub, soak for about 15 minutes, then work the cleaner through the foam by hand. Avoid wringing – just press and squeeze to protect foam integrity.
  • Rinse thoroughly with water (preferably warm), then squeeze out excess fluid. Allow the filter to air dry completely.

Oil – Grease – Reinstall

  • Oil the filter inside and out with air filter-specific oil. Ensure it is fully saturated but not dripping – too little oil risks engine contamination, too much can restrict airflow or leak into the intake. For aerosol oils, apply until the filter is moist throughout (not dry spots), and if using liquid oil, submerge and squeeze out excess without wringing.
  • Use a thin layer of waterproof grease around the filter sealing edge to ensure no dust bypasses the filter.
  • Reinstall the filter onto the cage, align it with the tabs and prongs – make sure it's seated flat with no gaps.
  • Insert the cage and filter assembly back into the airbox, lock the tabs or clips securely.

Replacement

  • If the filter is torn, extremely dirty, or showing signs of age (cracked foam, loose seams), replace it immediately. KTM's tool-less system means keeping a fresh spare on hand is simple – swap in a clean one after every ride or every few hours in heavy dust.
  • Always match new filters with the correct year/model for proper fit and sealing.

Model-Specific Notes for 2020 KTM 250SXF-FE

  • This model's side-entry airbox makes inspection – maintenance fast. However, because the FE variant comes with enduro-style tuning, expect more frequent air filter service during extended trail or off-road events due to increased dust and varied terrain.
  • Owners should avoid over-oiling, as KTM's airbox design may allow excess oil to pool or drip, increasing risk to engine or throttle body components.
  • It is recommended to check the air filter after every ride and always travel with a pre-oiled spare filter on long trips or races.
