The 2020 Cobra CX50SR is engineered for racing performance and demands careful attention to air filter maintenance. Keeping your air filter clean and properly oiled is crucial for both engine protection and optimal power delivery, as the CX50SR's high-revving 50cc two-stroke engine greatly depends on unrestricted airflow and immaculate internal conditions.

Why Air Filter Maintenance Is Critical for the CX50SR

  • Frequent cleaning or replacement: Air filter inspection and maintenance should be performed after every moto for this model. Harsh track conditions and the bike's compact airbox mean dust and debris quickly compromise filter effectiveness.
  • Performance impact: Even a slightly dirty, dry, or poorly sealed filter can create dramatic changes in carburetor jetting and engine response.

Tools – Materials You'll Need

  • Fresh air filter(s) (OEM or high-quality aftermarket)
  • Air filter oil (specifically for foam filters)
  • Filter sealing grease
  • Hot, soapy water and a bucket
  • Kerosene or diesel (if needed, never gasoline)
  • Clean, lint-free towels
  • Nitrile gloves

Removing the Air Filter

  1. Remove the seat to access the airbox.
  2. Squeeze the two tabs on the wire retainer (see owner's manual image A1) and pull the retainer up & out.
  3. Gently pull the air filter from the airbox.
  4. Clean the airbox interior, with special attention between the filter mounting area and carburetor. Remove all dust and debris.

Tip: Cobra offers a carburetor inlet cover (RCMU0109) to simplify cleaning without risking contamination of the carburetor.

Cleaning the Filter

  1. Wash the foam element in hot, soapy water, squeezing gently to remove dirt. Rinse thoroughly. Do not use gasoline; hot water or kerosene/diesel is safer.
  2. Allow the filter to dry completely – this is essential for proper filter oil absorption.
  3. Saturate the filter evenly with high-quality foam filter oil. Massage oil throughout the foam, ensuring all pores are coated. Squeeze out excess oil until the filter no longer drips.

Warning: Amount of oil applied must be consistent each time; over-oiling or under-oiling will affect carburetor jetting on the CX50SR.

Reinstalling the Filter

  1. Apply sealing grease to the black sealing edge of the filter to prevent unfiltered air from bypassing the foam.
  2. Reinstall the filter into the airbox.
  3. Fit the wire retainer: squeeze tabs, insert the retainer, then push it down until fully seated. Ensure all tabs click through the correct slots (refer to owner's manual image A2).
  4. Double-check the filter's seal before reinstalling the seat.

How Often Should You Replace?

  • The high-dust environment and intense use of the CX50SR demand multiple filters in your toolbox for race days–use a fresh one for each moto. Foam filters degrade over time, so replace at first sign of damage, poor fit, or excess staining.

Special Notes for 2020 Cobra CX50SR Owners

  • This model's air filter design is specific to the Cobra CX50SR and FWE platforms from 2012–2020, so only proper fitment filters should be used for a correct seal and optimal airflow.
  • Neglecting air filter maintenance may result in power loss, poor running, or costly top-end damage because the CX50SR's carbureted, high-output engine is sensitive to intake restrictions and dirt ingestion.
  • Always check the airbox sealing and interior for hidden dust after cleaning, especially before motos in muddy or extra dusty conditions.

Keeping your 2020 Cobra CX50SR's air filter clean and properly sealed maximizes performance and engine life. With race-day filter changes and the right attention to oil and greasing, your bike will deliver consistent power through every lap.
