The 2018 Yamaha TW200 remains one of the most reliable dual-sport bikes, renowned for its ruggedness and simplicity. Proper air filter maintenance ensures consistent performance and longevity, especially under the tough conditions this model is built for.
Accessing the Air Filter
- Locate the air filter: It sits under the seat, behind the left side panel.
- Remove the left side panel: Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the two panel screws. Pull the panel straight out to disengage the retaining tab from the gas tank–it pops right out.
- Keep screws separated: The side panel screws are shorter than the four screws holding the airbox panel. Mixing them up may cause installation issues.
- Remove the airbox panel: Take out the four longer screws.
Inspecting the Air Filter
- Carefully pull out the filter element from the airbox panel.
- Check for dirt, debris, or tears. Tears require immediate replacement.
- Dirty filters restrict airflow, reducing power & efficiency.
Cleaning the Air Filter
- For foam filters, use an air filter cleaning solution. Saturate the filter thoroughly, gently working out dirt and oil.
- Rinse in clean water and let dry completely before re-oiling.
- Inspect the filter cage and filter bracket for any build-up.
- Clean the inside of the airbox with a damp paper towel to remove residual dust and debris.
Oiling & Reinstalling
- Apply foam filter oil evenly–use the supplied bag for minimal mess. The TW200 works best with a lightly but fully coated filter.
- Optionally, apply a small amount of grease around the inner edge where the filter seats. This improves the seal and prevents unfiltered air bypass.
- Reinstall the filter onto the cage/frame, then fit it into the airbox panel.
- Replace all covers and screws, ensuring proper seating.
Replacement Interval & Specialty Advice
- Check/clean the filter every 3,000 miles–inspect more often in dusty or wet riding conditions.
- Always replace torn, worn, or excessively dirty filters. The TW200's engine is air-cooled–intake dust can rapidly degrade cylinder walls if the filter is compromised.
- Aftermarket foam filters (UNI or similar) are popular for this model. Follow the same steps for cleaning and oiling.
TW200 Owner Tips
- Keep track of screw lengths–the TW200 panels use both short and long screws for different panels, and mixing them up is a common mistake.
- When reinstalling side panels, align tabs and grommets carefully to prevent cracking or loss of fit.
- Always check the rubber seal channel inside the airbox–missing seals allow dirty air to bypass the filter, risking engine damage.
