Keeping your 2018 KTM 65SX running at peak performance means regular air filter maintenance. The air filter is a critical component, especially for a youth racing bike like the 65SX, which thrives in dusty and dirty environments. Dirty or neglected filters can reduce power and increase engine wear. MotoSport is your source for OEM and upgrade parts, plus professional tips for KTM owners – here is our proprietary, model-specific guide for the 2018 KTM 65SX.

Accessing the Air Filter

  • Remove the seat to access the air filter. On the 2018 KTM 65SX, locate and remove the two seat bolts on each side of the seat. Slide the seat back and lift offno specialty tools required.
  • The air filter box is directly beneath. Remove the air filter cover by unclipping the filter holder and swinging it backthis exposes the air filter and cage.

Removing the Air Filter

  • Carefully pull out the air filter with its cage. Be gentle to avoid any dirt falling into the air boot. If any debris enters, clean it immediately with a lint-free rag and contact cleaner.
  • Inspect the air boot for dust or dirt as an indicator of how well your filter is sealingaddress any leaks or damage before reinstallation.

Cleaning the Filter

  • Foam filter cleaning: Submerge the dirty filter in a tub of air filter cleaning solvent or a specifically designed foam air filter cleaner. Work the cleaner into the foam, massaging dirt and oil out until clean.
  • Let the solvent do its work for 10-15 minutes. Agitate gently by hand, but never use harsh brushes or wringing/twisting, which can damage the foam.
  • Rinse thoroughly with clean water (cold or lukewarm). Continue until the water runs clear.
  • Gently squeeze out excess water. Allow the filter to dry completelyusing compressed air on foam can cause tears.

Oiling and Reinstalling

  • Apply only foam air filter oil (specific to your cleaner if using biodegradable oils). Thoroughly massage oil into every part of the filter for an even, sticky coatingthis traps dirt and dust.
  • Install the oiled filter back on the cage, making sure it sits flush with no gaps.
  • Inspect the filter sealing rim. KTM recommends applying a thin layer of filter grease to the rim for the best seal.
  • Reattach the filter holder, air filter cover, and reinstall your seat.

When to Clean or Replace

  • Clean your filter after every long or dusty ride, or at minimum every 2-3 rides.
  • If the filter is ripped, excessively dirty, or no longer seals tightly, replace it with a new one.

Special Tips for the 2018 KTM 65SX Owner

  • The 65SX uses a large, accessible foam filter with no need to remove bodywork for maintenanceideal for quick pit stops at the track.
  • This generation KTM's airbox design provides tool-free access for filter changes & cleaning, but always check seat bolt torque before reinstalling.
  • Youth bikes are often ridden in extreme conditions, so error on the side of more frequent air filter service for maximum engine life.
