The 2018 Kawasaki KX85 demands a clean and properly oiled air filter for peak performance, throttle response, and engine longevity. A dirty or incorrectly sealed air filter can seriously threaten your engine by allowing dirt and debris into the intake – regular maintenance is essential.
When – and Why – Maintain Your KX85 Air Filter
- Clean after every ride in extremely dusty or muddy conditions, or after every three races/7.5 hours as a minimum.
- Replace the air filter element if damaged, deteriorated, or excessively dirty and unable to clean adequately.
KX85s, like all two-strokes, are especially sensitive to air filter condition—neglecting it can lead to rapid engine wear or failure.
Tools & Supplies You'll Need
- 8 mm socket or T-handle (for seat removal)
- High-quality foam air filter oil
- Foam air filter cleaner or a suitable non-flammable cleaning agent
- Gloves, clean rags, and a bucket
- Lint-free towel
Removal – Step-by-Step Instructions
- Remove the seat by loosening the two 8 mm bolts at the rear.
- Take out the wing bolt holding the air filter in place.
- Cautiously pull out the air filter – avoid knocking any loose debris into the intake.
- Insert a clean, lint-free towel into the air boot to keep dirt out of the carburetor and engine [vital for KX85] .
Cleaning Procedure
- Remove the filter from its cage and inspect for tears or excessive degradation.
- Soak the filter in foam filter cleaner. Gently squeeze (never wring or twist) to work out dirt and old oil .
- Rinse thoroughly with clean water until all dirt and cleaning agent are removed.
- Allow the filter to air dry completely or pat dry with a paper towel. Do not use compressed air, as this can damage the foam.
- Clean the inside of the airbox and the cage. Ensure no dirt remains inside or near the intake boot .
Oiling – Reinstallation
- Status-check: The filter must be completely dry before oiling.
- Saturate the filter with high-quality foam filter oil (do not use anything else) .
- Gently squeeze out excess oil – the filter should be evenly sticky, not dripping wet or dry.
- Wipe your gloved fingers around the rim of the filter for extra oil coverage, and also consider a thin bead of waterproof grease on the sealing edge for added protection (optional, but some KX85 riders prefer it).
- Install the filter back onto its cage, ensuring perfect alignment.
- Reinsert the filter/cage assembly, fasten with the wing bolt, and confirm a secure, airtight fit .
- Remove the rag from the intake boot, reinstall the seat, and torque bolts evenly.
Model-Specific KX85 Tips & Cautions
- The KX85 features a compact airbox that is easily contaminated—never skip plugging the intake boot when cleaning the filter.
- Foam tearing or filter misalignment is a common cause of sand and debris ingestion in the KX85; always double-check the filter sits flush and seals fully across the airbox surface.
- Never use gasoline or harsh, flammable solvents—these damage filter foam and may cause a fire hazard .
- Inspect the air boot and carburetor for leftover dirt or filter fragments before reassembly, cleaning as needed to protect your two-stroke engine.
Replacement Intervals
- Cleaning: After heavy rides or every 3 races (7.5 hours) at minimum.
- Replacement: Any time the filter shows damage, has persistent clogging, or foam deterioration.
Staying on top of air filter maintenance is a simple, low-cost way to keep your 2018 KX85 running strong and reliable ride after ride.
