Keeping the air filter in your 2017 Kawasaki KLX110 clean and properly maintained is one of the most important tasks for maximizing both engine longevity and performance. The air filter is your first line of defense against dirt and debris – when it becomes clogged, your engine can lose power and risk internal damage. Use this MotoSport-exclusive, step-by-step guide to keep your KLX110 running strong.
What You Need
- 8mm socket/wrench
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Foam air filter cleaner (or mild degreaser)
- Clean rags
- Foam filter oil (specialty air filter oil is required)
- Rubber gloves (optional, recommended)
Accessing the Air Filter
- Start by removing both left and right side panels, followed by the seat. For the 2017 KLX110, the shroud assembly is held in place with standard bolts you can remove with an 8mm t-handle wrench.
- Next, remove the air filter cover by unscrewing the three Phillips screws.
- With the cover removed, carefully insert a rag into the intake tube to prevent dirt from entering the engine during service.
Cleaning the Air Filter
- Remove the foam filter element from the air box. Inspect for damage or excessive wear – if the foam is torn, hardened, or falling apart, replace with a new filter to ensure proper filtration.
- If cleaning, spray both sides thoroughly with air filter cleaner or a mild degreaser. Let the cleaner sit for a few minutes to break down accumulated dirt and oil.
- Gently rinse the foam filter under running water, squeezing (not wringing) to remove grime. Repeat the cleaning and rinsing process if needed until the water runs clear.
- Let the filter air dry completely before re-oiling. Placing the filter in a sunny, warm area will speed drying.
Oiling the Air Filter
- Once dry, apply foam filter oil evenly throughout the filter. Work the oil in thoroughly; all areas of foam should appear evenly coated but not heavily dripping.
- Excess oil can be gently squeezed out. Proper oiling traps fine dust yet allows air to flow uninhibited.
Reinstalling the Filter
- Wipe the inside of the air box clean with a rag. Ensure there is no dust or debris left behind.
- Remove the rag from the intake tube.
- Reinstall the air filter, making sure it seats completely for a good seal.
- Replace the air filter cover and secure with all screws.
- Reattach the shroud, seat, and side panels in reverse order of removal.
Replacement Interval – Special Notes for the KLX110
- Kawasaki recommends cleaning the air filter every six months or 50 hours of riding, whichever comes first. In dusty or muddy conditions, cleaning should be more frequent.
- The 2017 KLX110 air box design features a compact side-access setup for quick removal but less overall capacity compared to full-size motocross bikes. Because of this, it tends to clog quicker in harsh conditions.
- Pay extra attention to correct seating of the filter to prevent unfiltered air leaks around the edge of the filter frame. Improper installation is a common cause of premature engine wear in KLX110 models.
- Always use only foam-specific air filter oil. Standard motor oil does not provide the same dirt-trapping properties and may harm the filter material.
Signs Your Air Filter Needs Immediate Replacement
- Engine bogging or loss of power, especially under load
- Filter foam is brittle, falling apart, or severely stained
- Visible holes or tears in foam material
Pro Tip from MotoSport
- Maintain a second filter for easy swaps between rides. This ensures you never have downtime while waiting for a filter to dry.
Consistent air filter care prevents performance issues, increases engine life, and keeps you on the trail with confidence. For genuine KLX110 air filters, maintenance kits, and all other parts, MotoSport has you covered.
