Air Filter Cleaning – Replacement Guide for 2015 Yamaha YZ85

Shop parts for a 2015 Yamaha YZ85 Dirt Bike.

The 2015 Yamaha YZ85 is a lightweight, high-revving two-stroke designed for youth motocross, and keeping the air filter clean or replaced is critical for engine longevity & top performance. A clogged or improperly oiled filter limits power and risks dirt ingestion that could cause catastrophic engine damage. Owners of the YZ85 should note that the airbox configuration provides relatively easy access, making routine maintenance possible trackside or in the garage.

Required Supplies

  • New or freshly cleaned foam air filter specific to YZ85
  • Yamaha-approved foam air filter oil
  • Filter cleaning solution (foam-specific cleaner or mild detergent)
  • Latex or nitrile gloves
  • Clean water
  • Rags or paper towels
  • Socket wrench (for seat removal)
  • Grease (for sealing filter rim)

Step-By-Step Cleaning – Replacement

  1. Remove the seat and air filter:
    • Use a socket wrench to remove the seat bolts.
    • Lift the seat off to expose the airbox.
    • The YZ85 uses a wingnut to secure the filter cage. Unscrew the wingnut and carefully pull out the filter assembly.
  2. Inspect the filter:
    • If the filter has any tears, holes, or degraded foam, replace it with a new one. Never reuse a damaged filter.
    • If intact, proceed to clean.
  3. Clean the air filter:
    • Wearing gloves, submerge the dirty filter in a bucket with foam filter cleaner or a mild detergent mixed with water.
    • Gently massage and squeeze the filter to remove dirt and oil. Do not twist or wring it out aggressively, as this can damage the foam and compromise filtration performance.
    • Rinse thoroughly in clean water until all soap is gone.
    • Let the filter air dry completely. Avoid dryers that apply direct heat, which can shrink the foam.
  4. Oil the filter:
    • Pour a high-quality foam filter oil into a clean bag; evenly distribute oil throughout the filter by working it in gently by hand.
    • Ensure all areas are completely saturated. Do not use aerosol spray oil, which can result in uneven coverage.
    • Lightly squeeze out excess oil (do not wring), so it is tacky but not dripping.
  5. Refit the filter:
    • Apply a thin layer of grease to the sealing edge of the filter to prevent any potential dust leaks at the seal surface.
    • Install the air filter onto the cage and secure using the wingnut. Make sure the filter sits evenly and is properly sealed all around.
  6. Reinstall seat:
    • Place the seat back on the bike and tighten the bolts securely.

Maintenance Tips for the 2015 YZ85

  • After every muddy or dusty ride, inspect & clean the filter. Standard intervals may not suffice for harsh off-road conditions.
  • Always keep a spare, pre-oiled filter for quick swaps at the track.
  • The YZ85's two-stroke engine tolerates very little dirt, as its clearance tolerances are narrower than larger bikes.
  • When cleaning the airbox, immediately plug the throttle body or carburetor throat to prevent debris from dropping into the intake during service.
  • Use only genuine YZ85-specific filter elements—universal or poorly fitting filters could allow unfiltered air into the engine.

Proper air filter maintenance is key to keeping your 2015 Yamaha YZ85 running strong, whether you're practicing, racing, or just riding for fun. Clean, oil, and inspect regularly – your engine's performance and lifespan depend on it.
