Shop parts for a 2015 Cobra CX50SR Dirt Bike.
The 2015 Cobra CX50SR is a competition-only minicross bike, engineered for serious riders and built with high-performance, race-focused components. Proper air filter care is critical to engine longevity and top racing performance. Unique to the CX50SR, attention to airbox cleanliness between the filter and carburetor is essential due to the design of the intake tract. Neglect leads to fast wear and potential engine damage, so follow this MotoSport-exclusive guide for best results.
Tools & Materials Needed
- 4 mm Allen wrench
- Phillips screwdriver
- Diesel fuel or kerosene (preferred for initial cleaning)
- Mild, hot soapy water
- High-quality air filter oil
- Grease (for sealing surface)
- Shop towels & protective gloves
Removal
- Remove seat by loosening the seat mounting bolt with a 4 mm Allen wrench.
- Carefully pull the air filter out of the airbox. Squeeze the tabs on the wire retainer to release the filter and remove it.
- Check the black sealing surface for dirt or debris before proceeding.
Cleaning Procedure
- Clean excess dirt from the airbox itself, especially between the filter seat and carburetor intake. Use a carburetor cover (RCMU0109) if available for the CX50SR to prevent foreign matter entering the carburetor.
- Rinse the filter with diesel fuel or kerosene to remove heavy grime. (Do not use gasoline.)
- Wash in hot, soapy water and work out all residual contaminants. Repeat if necessary.
- Rinse thoroughly. Squeeze – never wring – to avoid tearing the filter.
- Allow the filter to dry fully in a dust-free environment.
Oiling & Installation
- Saturate the filter with air filter oil, then gently squeeze out excess. Be consistent; uneven oil application can affect air flow and engine performance.
- Apply a thin layer of grease to the black sealing surface to ensure a tight fit – this prevents bypass of unfiltered air.
- Reinstall the filter in the airbox, making sure the wire retainer locks securely. Double-check alignment for a solid seal.
Replacement
- MotoSport recommends replacement if the filter shows physical damage, shrinkage, thinning, or if performance declines after cleaning. Always use the correct part for the CX50SR – using off-spec models can alter fit and compromise filtration.
- Replace air filter oil regularly with a fresh application after every cleaning.
Model-Specific Notes
- CX50SR Airbox: The airbox area on the CX50SR has a direct path to the carburetor. Cleaning the airbox and installing a carburetor cover (if available) during maintenance helps safeguard your engine from damaging particles.
- Race Use: Clean or change the air filter after every race or ride in dusty conditions to prevent costly repairs.
- Competition Focus: This is a race-only machine; all service steps matter for maximum power and reliability.
Pro Tip
- Inspect the wire retainer and sealing surface every time. Proper seating is as important as clean media.
