Air Filter Cleaning – Replacement Guide for 2014 Yamaha TTR50
Shop parts for a 2014 Yamaha TTR50 Dirt Bike.
Maintaining the air filter on your 2014 Yamaha TTR50 is critical for both engine performance and longevity. The compact size of the TTR50’s foam air filter means maintenance should be done often, especially if you ride in wet or dusty conditions–at least every couple of rides, if not sooner.
Why Clean or Replace the Air Filter?
A dirty or clogged air filter prevents optimal airflow, limiting engine power and potentially allowing dirt or moisture into the engine. This can cause serious damage overtime and affect performance. The TTR50’s small filter size means it can clog more quickly than larger models, so regular inspection is a must for reliable operation.
Tools and Materials Needed
- Phillips screwdriver
- Parts cleaning solvent (not gasoline or low flash-point solvents)
- Recommended air filter oil
- Clean rags or shop towels
- Disposable gloves (optional but recommended)
Step-by-Step Guide: Cleaning – Replacement
-
Remove the air filter cover: Locate the airbox on the left side and remove the three Phillips screws to release the air filter cover.
(Note: The third screw may be behind a wire or cable. Use care not to strip the screws.) - Extract the filter: Pull out the foam air filter and its mesh support carefully. The TTR50's filter is small and delicate.
- Inspect for damage: Check the foam for tears, excessive wear, or breakdown. Replace if needed.
- Clean the mesh: Wash the mesh support with a dedicated solvent, then wipe it dry.
- Clean the filter: Soak the foam filter in a parts-specific cleaning solvent. Gently knead and squeeze to remove dirt. Never use gasoline or twist/wring the foam–this can damage it .
- Dry: Let the foam air dry completely. Do not apply heat.
- Re-oil the filter: Apply air filter oil thoroughly through all foam pores. Massage the oil in, either by hand or in a plastic bag. Squeeze to distribute and remove excess oil. Do not oversaturate–the foam should be tacky but not dripping.
- Reassemble: Place the oiled filter (with mesh support) back into the airbox. Ensure the sealing edges fit snugly to prevent unfiltered air from entering.
- Replace the filter cover: Reattach the airbox cover with all three screws secured.
- Check the drain tube: Periodically inspect and clean the airbox drain tube to avoid water or oil build-up .
