The air filter is a vital part of your 2014 Yamaha PW50’s performance and longevity. A properly maintained air filter keeps dirt, dust, and debris out of the engine, ensuring smooth running and maximum power. Routine cleaning and timely replacement are essential—especially since the PW50 is often used in dusty or off-road environments.
Understanding the 2014 PW50 Air Filter
The 2014 Yamaha PW50 uses a foam-style air filter, known for dual-stage filtration. The outer foam layer catches large particles, while the finer inner layer traps smaller debris for reliable engine protection. Its design increases air volume and optimizes airflow, which is crucial for the small engine’s power output.
When to Clean or Replace the Air Filter
- Inspect after every ride in dusty or sandy conditions.
- Clean when the filter appears dirty or mildly clogged.
- Replace the filter if the foam tears, crumbles, or won’t clean up properly.
Tip: If your PW50 is used mainly for junior or beginner riders, dirt and debris can build up even faster with throttle-heavy riding scenarios.
How to Clean the Air Filter
- Remove the left side cover by unscrewing the single Phillips screw (you may need to gently press down the kickstarter for clearance).
- Pull the filter out of the airbox. Visually inspect the filter for tears or excessive wear–if damaged, replace it immediately.
- Clean the airbox with a rag and a small amount of contact cleaner. Ensure no loose dirt remains that could contaminate the intake.
- Soak the foam filter in a specific foam filter cleaner or a mild detergent mixed with warm water. Let it sit for 10–15 minutes. Gently work the cleaner into the foam without twisting or wringing, which could damage the filter.
- Rinse thoroughly with clean water until no dirt or soap remains. Gently squeeze (do not twist) excess liquid out.
- Let the filter air dry completely.
- Once dry, apply foam filter oil evenly. Work the oil through the foam, ensuring full coverage for maximum dirt-trapping performance.
- Reinstall the filter, ensuring a proper seal in the airbox, and tighten the side cover securely.
How to Replace the Air Filter
- Remove the air filter as described above.
- Install a new, dual-stage foam air filter (specific to PW50; check for fitment and sealing surface).
- Oil the new filter thoroughly and check for a precise fit to avoid air leaks.
- Reassemble all parts, double-checking that the airbox is clean and free from any debris.
PW50-Specific Notes
- The compact airbox can collect more dust than larger models—inspect the whole assembly for cracks or defects that can let dirt bypass the filter.
- The foam filter can deteriorate over time even with low mileage. Replacements are affordable and prevent major engine damage.
- An oiled, dual-stage foam filter offers the best balance of protection and airflow for the PW50 motor.
Regular air filter maintenance keeps your 2014 Yamaha PW50 running at its best. Make cleaning or replacing the filter part of your post-ride routine, or more often in challenging conditions. Keeping the intake system in top shape means longer engine life, less downtime, and more fun for every ride.
