Maintaining your 2013 Suzuki DRZ400S air filter is essential for peak performance, especially since this legendary dual-sport is often used for both rugged off-road adventures and daily commutes. Clogged or dirty air filters can limit airflow, compromise engine output, – and over time – increase engine wear. Use this proprietary MotoSport guide to ensure your DR-Z stays ready for the next ride.
Required Tools & Supplies
- Clean gloves
- Filter-specific cleaner
- Air filter oil
- Small brush or toothbrush (optional, for stubborn grime)
- Funnel (for oil application)
- Grease (for filter sealing surface)
- Lint-free towels
- Replacement filter (OEM or performance upgrade if needed)
Removal & Inspection
- Remove your seat and side panel to access the airbox.
- Locate the locking pin; pull it free and gently slide out the filter. Do not damage the foam element or rubber gaskets.
- Inspect the filter. If it is torn, brittle, or overly grimy, replace it immediately for best engine health.
Cleaning Process
- Lightly tap the filter to remove loose dirt.
- Spray with air filter cleaner – thoroughly saturate inside and outside.
- Let the cleaner soak for 5-10 minutes.
- Rinse gently with a hose from the inside out to push particles out of the foam, never into it. Repeat until water runs clear.
- Avoid twisting or wringing to protect the glued seams. Simply squeeze out excess water using a towel, or let air dry for optimal results.
Oil Application
- Once dry, apply air filter oil evenly across the foam. Use hands to massage the oil into every crevice without over-saturating.
- Gently squeeze (not wring) to remove excess oil.
- Apply a thin layer of grease on the inner lip/sealing edge for a tight seal – this prevents dust ingress into your intake.
Refitting the Filter
- Reinstall the filter, ensure a snug fit against the airbox.
- Replace the cover and locking pin.
- Reinstall the seat and side panel. Double-check every connection and seal.
When to Replace the Filter
- Check and clean the filter every oil change (about every 3,000 miles) or after heavy dust/mud rides.
- Replace the filter if you notice tears, loose seams, excessive wear, or persistent engine performance issues.
- Consider an air filter screen cover for added mud and sand protection on tough trails.
Special Notes for 2013 DRZ400S Owners
- This model uses a robust foam filter designed for both commuting and aggressive trail riding. Pay special attention to outer debris after off-road sessions, and periodically inspect the airbox itself for build-up.
- Never use gasoline, harsh solvents, or compressed air to clean the foam – these methods can degrade filters and cause poor engine performance.
- For best results, keep two filters on hand. Alternate them between cleaning cycles to limit downtime.
