Air Filter Cleaning – Replacement Guide for 2012 Yamaha YZ250

Shop parts for a 2012 Yamaha YZ250 Dirt Bike.

The 2012 Yamaha YZ250 is a race-proven two-stroke built for reliability and power – but proper maintenance, especially air filter care, is crucial for performance. Dirty or damaged air filters can cause dirt ingestion and lower power output. Specific to the YZ250, the air box allows relatively quick access, and the foam style filter requires regular cleaning and oiling to protect the engine and maintain throttle response.

Air Filter Removal

  • Make sure the bike is off and cool before starting work.
  • Remove the seat: The YZ250 seat is secured with two bolts – one on each side. Remove these and slide the seat backward and up to access the air box.
  • Carefully remove the air filter cover/element. Note how the filter is oriented inside the air box.

Inspection

  • Check the foam filter for tears, holes, or signs of deterioration. Replace immediately if damaged.
  • Inspect the rubber sealing edges for cuts or deformations.

Cleaning Process

  • Use only cleaning products designed for foam air filters – avoid gasoline, which can degrade the foam.
  • Fill a clean bucket with warm water and foam air filter cleaner or dish soap. Allow the filter to soak and loosen debris.
  • Gently squeeze (do not twist) the filter multiple times to wash out dirt and old oil. Rinse until water runs clear.
  • For best results, allow the filter to air dry completely before oiling. Using compressed air can cause tears in the foam if not used carefully.

Oiling – Installation

  • Apply high-quality foam filter oil evenly. Pour filter oil into a plastic bag and massage the filter inside the bag, ensuring all surfaces are saturated. Avoid aerosol sprays, as full penetration is difficult to guarantee.
  • After oiling, let the excess drain off, and avoid leaving pools of oil inside the filter.
  • Lightly grease the sealing edge (use lithium soap-based grease) before installing the filter – this improves air box sealing and keeps out fine dust.
  • Reinstall the filter and seat, ensuring the air filter guide is properly in place, and that the cover fits tightly.

Replacement Notes

  • Replace the filter if there is permanent staining, damage, hardened foam, or filter breakdown. Always keep a spare, pre-oiled filter on hand for fast swaps between motos.
  • The YZ250's engine is sensitive to intake dirt; check the air filter after every ride, especially in dusty or sandy conditions. Clean at least every 1–2 rides, or more frequently, as needed.

Special Tips for the 2012 YZ250

  • This model's relatively open air box design offers performance but increases dust exposure. Careful installation ensures the filter seals completely, preventing gaps that can allow sand or dust into the intake tract.
  • Factory Yamaha and aftermarket performance filters (such as two-layer GYTR units) may offer improved airflow and filtration. Consider upgrading if you routinely ride in extreme conditions or race competitively.

Consistent filter maintenance keeps your 2012 YZ250 running strong – protect your investment and keep your dirt bike ready for any adventure.
