Air Filter Cleaning & Replacement Guide for 2012 Suzuki RM85L

The air filter in your 2012 Suzuki RM85L is a crucial component for engine performance and longevity. RM85L models use a foam dual-stage air filter that combines high-volume airflow – vital for small two-strokes – with robust dirt and dust filtration. Unlike disposable filters, most RM85L air filters are designed to be washable and reusable, thanks to fused open-pore outer foam and fine inner foam that trap even the smallest particulates while maintaining airflow and power.
When Should You Clean or Replace the Air Filter?
- Clean after every ride in dusty, sandy, or muddy conditions.
- Replace immediately if the foam tears, loses structure, or if the sealing ring shows damage.
- For recreational or race use, check before each ride for maximum reliability — RM85 engines are sensitive to dirt ingestion.
Tools & Supplies Needed
- Clean gloves to protect your airbox from contaminants
- Dedicated air filter cleaner (mild soap for light cleaning)
- Bucket for cleaning & rinsing
- Air filter oil (never skip oiling after cleaning)
- Lint-free cloth/towel
- Spare air filter (for quick swaps or race prep)
How to Remove & Inspect the RM85L Air Filter
- Remove the seat to access the airbox.
- Unfasten any retaining screw, clip, or bolt holding the filter in place.
- Gently pull out the filter, keeping any dirt or sand from falling into the intake.
- Inspect the foam for tears, dry rot, or deteriorated adhesive at the seams.
Cleaning Instructions
- Put on clean gloves.
- Brush or shake loose dirt from the outside of the filter.
- Submerge the filter in a bucket of dedicated cleaner or mild soapy water. Squeeze the foam repeatedly – never wring, twist, or use aggressive scrubbing.
- Rinse thoroughly with clean water until no debris or soap remains; repeat if necessary.
- Allow the filter to air dry completely – never use compressed air or a heat source that may damage the foam.
Oiling & Reinstallation
- Apply air filter oil evenly across all foam surfaces. Massage to saturate, but ensure there are no dry patches.
- Wipe off any excess oil – heavy excess can restrict airflow or drip into the airbox.
- Check the greaseless sealing ring around the filter; make sure it fits snug against the airbox to prevent leaks.
- Reinstall the filter carefully, making sure no edges are folded or pinched.
- Refit seat and hardware.
Special Notes for 2012 Suzuki RM85L Owners
- RM85L airboxes demand a proper seal; inspect the filter's sealing ring and airbox surface every cleaning to prevent air leaks and engine wear.
- Heritage foam filters (from 2002-2014) are generally compatible, but always check part fitment for the 2012 RM85L before installation.
- Twin Air and Tusk First Line filters are most common; high-quality dual density foam filters last longer and filter finer dust, which helps preserve engine life.
- Pre-oiled disposable filters are available, but single-use only – do not attempt to wash & reuse.
- If riding in wet or muddy conditions, consider a filter cover or extra filter on hand for quick swaps.
MotoSport Proprietary Tip
Always inspect the inside of the airbox during filter maintenance. Wipe out any collected dust, sand, or oil before filter re-installation. A clean airbox every time you check the filter is the best protection for your RM85L two-stroke's engine – more power, less wear, longer rides.
