Maintaining a clean air filter is essential to keep your 2009 Suzuki DR650SE running at peak performance. A clogged air filter causes increased intake resistance, reducing power and fuel efficiency–making regular cleaning or replacement a crucial maintenance task. Owners of this model should note that the DR650SE uses a polyurethane foam filter and includes both a primary and secondary filter for optimal protection.
How Often to Clean or Replace the Air Filter
- Clean the air filter every 3,000 km (or about 2,000 miles), or more frequently if you ride in dusty or muddy conditions.
- If you notice any rips, cracks, or damage in the foam element during inspection, replace it immediately to prevent engine wear or air leaks.
Tools & Supplies Needed
- Phillips head screwdriver (JIS head recommended for proper fit)
- Non-flammable cleaning solvent (specific to motorcycle air filters or kerosene)
- Motor oil or motorcycle-specific foam air filter oil
- Disposable gloves
Cleaning Instructions
- Remove the left side frame cover to access the air box.
- Remove the air box cover by unscrewing the machine screws.
- Take out the air filter element by removing the support screw and the white retaining clip–be careful, the clip can deform if inserted incorrectly.
- Inspect the foam element for tears or abnormal cracks. If compromised, replace it with a new filter from MotoSport.
- Clean the element by immersing it in a washing pan filled with solvent. Gently press out contaminants–do not twist or wring the foam, as it can tear or lose structure.
- Rinse thoroughly with warm water and let the filter dry completely, ideally overnight.
- Oil the filter by applying air filter oil evenly across the foam. Hold the spray about three inches away and coat all surfaces. Let it sit for 20 minutes to ensure coverage.
- Reinstall the element with the clip cup facing up for easier installation. Make sure it seats properly inside the filter housing to avoid air leaks.
- Replace the cover and frame panel.
Secondary Air Filter Maintenance
- The DR650SE includes a secondary filter for the carburetor breather. Though not mentioned in standard manuals, inspect and clean this filter as needed. It is often secured by zip-tie near the airbox top–check its condition regularly and clean as required.
Model-Specific Notes
- The 2009 DR650SE's foam filter is sensitive to rough handling–always squeeze gently when cleaning or oiling.
- Older DR650SEs may have aging original foam filters. Regular inspection ensures optimal sealing and performance.
- Take care when reseating clips and covers. Deformed clips or misaligned filter edges can allow unfiltered air into the engine.
Careful air filter maintenance will help your 2009 Suzuki DR650SE deliver maximum reliability on every ride. For genuine replacement parts, cleaning solvents, and filter oils, MotoSport has everything you need for your model.
