Keeping your 2009 KTM 105XC running at peak performance depends heavily on proper air filter care. Just a short ride in dusty or muddy conditions can clog the filter, restricting airflow and increasing engine wear. This MotoSport-exclusive guide covers everything you need to maintain and replace the air filter on your 105XC.
About the 2009 KTM 105XC Air Filter
- The 105XC uses a foam-style air filter, designed for quick removal and straightforward cleaning.
- Filters such as the BMC FM407/08 offer 18.5% higher airflow than conventional paper filters, maximizing performance in a 2-stroke engine tuned for responsiveness and agility.
- This model is closely related to the KTM 85 platform but with a larger bore and specific suspension tuning, which makes regular filter servicing extra important for maintaining throttle response and protecting the engine in racing or trail conditions.
When to Clean or Replace Your Air Filter
- Clean after every ride in heavy dust, sand, or mud.
- Under moderate use, inspect every 5-10 hours and clean as soon as significant debris or discoloration is visible.
- Replace the filter annually or if you see tears, persistent staining, or signs of filter degradation.
Proprietary MotoSport Air Filter Cleaning Process
- Remove the seat using the quick-release or retained bolts.
- Release the airbox cover latch and carefully remove the cover.
- Extract the filter & cage assembly by gently pulling out–avoid dropping debris into the intake.
- Inspect the sealing surface for dirt. Clean the sealing flange of the airbox using a clean, damp cloth to prevent dirt tracing into the engine.
- If reusing the filter, tap off dry mud and debris away from the airbox, then submerge the foam in a designated filter cleaning solution. Gently squeeze, never wring or twist.
- Rinse with water until fully clean, then let air dry completely – never use compressed air or heat guns.
- Once dry, apply air filter-specific oil, work it in thoroughly for even coverage. Never use automotive oil.
- Reinstall the filter on its cage, making sure the edges are seated and there is no gap. A light coating of grease around the filter flange improves the seal.
- Return the filter & cage to the airbox, reinstall the cover and seat securely.
Replacing the Air Filter
- Use only filters specified for the 2009 KTM 105XC for proper fit and protection.
- Inspect the new filter for manufacturer defects before installation.
- Always oil a new foam filter before use, as a dry filter will not effectively trap dirt.
MotoSport Tips for 2009 KTM 105XC Owners
- The 105XC's high-revving 2-stroke engine is sensitive to dirt ingestion–never skip filter servicing before races or multi-day rides.
- Carry a spare pre-oiled filter and a spare cage during rides for rapid swap-outs on long or dusty days.
- Inspect the air boot for cracks or punctures during each filter change.
- The KTM 105XC shares many parts with the 85 XC and SX, but always verify filter fitment by MMY before purchase, as subtle differences exist.
Regular air filter care is simple, quick, and the best way to maximize reliability and throttle response on your 2009 KTM 105XC. Trust MotoSport to equip you with OEM and race-proven parts for every ride.
