Air Filter Cleaning – Replacement Guide for 2004 Yamaha XT225

Shop parts for a 2004 Yamaha XT225 Dirt Bike.

The 2004 Yamaha XT225 is renowned for its rugged simplicity and reliability, but maintaining peak performance requires regular air filter service. A clean and properly oiled air filter prevents dust, dirt, and debris from reaching the engine, ensuring maximum power and long engine life. Follow MotoSport’s proprietary step-by-step instructions tailored specifically for your XT225.

What Makes the 2004 XT225 Unique?

This model features a foam air filter situated in an accessible air box on the left side of the bike. Unlike modern paper or mesh elements, the foam material can be washed and re-used, but must always be thoroughly oiled before use for proper filtration. Over-oiling or running the filter dry risks damage, so follow the guidelines below for best results.

Tools – Supplies You’ll Need

  • Phillips head screwdriver (for air box and filter cover screws)
  • 10 mm socket or wrench (for left side cover bolt)
  • Quality foam filter oil
  • Bucket with warm water & mild detergent, or foam filter cleaner
  • Clean rags
  • Gloves (recommended)

Step-by-Step Air Filter Removal

  1. Turn off the bike and let it cool completely for safety.
  2. Locate the left side cover of the bike, below the fuel tank petcock.
  3. Remove the single 10 mm bolt at the lower front of the side cover.
  4. Remove the three Phillips head screws securing the side panel.
  5. Gently pull the cover away, releasing any grommets.
  6. Inside, you’ll see the air box. Remove the three Phillips screws holding the air box cover.
  7. Slide the cover off. The foam air filter sits inside on a plastic cage–simply pull the filter out.

Cleaning – Oiling the Air Filter

  1. Inspect the filter. If torn or heavily degraded, replace with a new foam filter.
  2. For cleaning, submerge the foam in warm soapy water, squeezing gently to remove dirt. Rinse until the water runs clear.
  3. Do not wring or twist the foam–excess force can cause tears.
  4. If using a filter-specific cleaner, follow product instructions for application and rinsing.
  5. Allow the filter to air dry completely. Never reinstall a wet filter.
  6. Once dry, apply foam air filter oil evenly. Massage oil through the entire filter, ensuring full coverage without pooling.
  7. Gently squeeze out excess oil. The filter should be tacky, not dripping.

Reinstallation – Final Steps

  1. Slide the freshly oiled filter back onto the plastic frame or cage.
  2. Press the assembly back into the air box, ensuring a snug fit and full seal along the perimeter.
  3. Replace the air box cover, tightening the three Phillips screws firmly, but do not overtighten.
  4. Align the side cover, secure the grommets, replace all screws, and tighten the 10 mm bolt.

Service Intervals & Maintenance Notes

  • Inspect your air filter every 3000 miles or after rides in dusty conditions.
  • Replace the filter every 12,000 miles, or sooner if excessively worn or deteriorated.
  • The XT225’s air box includes a snorkel for water protection–do not remove unless increased airflow is essential and you are willing to increase filter cleaning frequency.
  • Always ensure the filter is well oiled; a dry or under-oiled filter offers little engine protection.
  • Some riders attempt increased airflow by adding holes to the airbox. This is not recommended for most conditions, as it allows more dust and water exposure, risking engine damage.

Consistent air filter maintenance is among the best ways to extend the life and reliability of your 2004 Yamaha XT225. Follow these MotoSport-exclusive steps and enjoy smooth rides every time.
