Keeping the air filter clean and properly serviced on your 2004 Suzuki RMZ250 is essential for peak performance and engine longevity. The 2004 RMZ250 features a dual-stage foam filter system engineered specifically for demanding off-road conditions, where dust, sand, and dirt particles threaten engine health. The foam filter can be washed and reused many times, making regular maintenance both cost-effective and crucial for your ride.

Tools & Supplies Needed

  • Fresh or clean air filter (OEM, Twin Air, No Toil, or equivalent)
  • Air filter oil formulated for foam filters
  • Air filter cleaning solvent or mild dish soap
  • Latex or nitrile gloves
  • Clean rags or paper towels
  • Water source for rinsing
  • 8mm socket (for seat removal)

How to Remove the Air Filter

  1. Remove the seat using your 8mm socket to access the airbox.
  2. Carefully loosen the air filter wing nut or fastener inside the airbox.
  3. Gently slide out the filter, taking care to avoid knocking dirt into the intake.

Cleaning Process

  1. Pre-clean the filter by gently brushing or tapping off loose debris.
  2. Wash the foam filter in a basin with air filter cleaner or a diluted dish soap solution. Squeeze–never twist–the foam to avoid tearing seams or layers.
  3. Rinse under gentle running water until clean. Repeat wash if dirt persists.
  4. Allow the filter to air dry fully out of direct sunlight.

Oiling the Filter

  1. Once dry, apply air filter oil evenly. Work the oil into the foam, making sure to fully saturate the filter for proper particulate trapping.
  2. Carefully squeeze out any excess oil–the filter should be damp but not dripping.

Reinstallation

  1. Wipe the airbox and sealing flange clean using a damp cloth.
  2. Inspect the filter for damage or deteriorated seams, especially around the edges and glued sections where the coarse and fine foam layers meet.
  3. Reinstall the oiled filter, ensuring a snug fit and proper seal against the airbox to avoid unfiltered air leaks.
  4. Secure the fastener and reinstall the seat.

Replacement Intervals & Model-Specific Notes

  • Inspect and clean the air filter after every ride in dusty or sandy conditions, or every 1-2 rides in average terrain. Replace the filter if it shows tears, hardened foam, or damage to the glue seams or sealing ring.
  • The RMZ250's dual-layer foam design is highly effective but relies on correct oiling and frequent cleaning. Neglecting filter service can lead to engine wear or poor throttle response.
  • The 2004 RMZ250 uses a thick, flat, greaseless sealing ring–always check this seal for integrity to prevent contaminant ingress.
  • Twin Air and other leading aftermarket filters are engineered for compatibility with the RMZ250's unique airbox and performance demands. Washable/reusable filters may be serviced 15 or more times before requiring replacement, making them an economical option over paper or single-use filters.
  • Never operate your RMZ250 without a properly maintained air filter installed.

MotoSport Pro Tip

For best results, always keep a spare, pre-oiled filter in a resealable bag for quick swaps between motos or during multi-day rides. This reduces downtime and ensures maximum protection for your engine wherever you ride.
