The 2004 Kawasaki KX85 is a capable 2-stroke youth motocross bike with a high-revving engine, making air filter maintenance crucial for lasting performance and reliability. Proper air filter care protects your engine from grit and dust while ensuring clean airflow for optimal combustion.
Tools & Supplies Needed
- 8mm socket
- Clean rags
- Air filter cleaner
- Air filter oil
- Disposable gloves
- Waterproof grease (optional)
Removing the Air Filter
- Use the 8mm socket to remove the two bolts securing the seat. Lift off the seat to access the airbox.
- Locate the wing nut holding the air filter. Unscrew the wing nut and carefully remove the filter, paying attention not to drop debris into the airbox. Wipe any dust or grit from the airbox without letting particles fall inside.
Cleaning the Air Filter
- Remove the foam filter from the plastic cage.
- Soak the foam in air filter cleaner as specified on the product label. Gently massage and rinse until dirt and old oil are gone.
- Let the filter dry completely before oiling.
Oiling the Air Filter
- Saturate the foam filter with air filter oil - make sure all surfaces are evenly covered for maximum protection.
- Some riders choose to apply a thin layer of waterproof grease on the filter rim for extra sealing, but the filter must always be thoroughly oiled.
Reinstalling the Air Filter
- Align the filter cage and foam assembly with the mounting stud in the airbox.
- Secure the filter by tightening the wing nut. Make sure the seal is snug – do not over-tighten.
- Reinstall the seat and tighten the two seat bolts.
Replacement Guide
- Visually inspect your filter after every ride in dusty conditions.
- Replace the filter if there are rips, tears, or if the foam is degraded and does not spring back after squeezing.
KX85 Owner Advisory
- The 2004 KX85 uses a conventional foam air filter in the airbox behind the seat. It is designed for quick removal and service.
- Due to the high RPM and small displacement engine, regular filter maintenance is critical – a clogged filter will cause noticeable power loss.
- Be cautious when cleaning around the airbox - dirt contamination can lead to premature engine wear.
- Kawasaki filter screens are also available for additional protection in extreme muddy or sandy conditions.
Routine air filter maintenance is the most effective way to preserve the performance and life of your 2004 Kawasaki KX85. Proper cleaning – along with timely replacements – ensures you'll get the best out of every ride.
