The 2001 Suzuki DR650SE stands as a legendary dual-sport machine known for its reliable air-cooled single and unwavering endurance on trail or tarmac. Keeping its engine breathing clean is vital—routine cleaning and timely replacement of the air filter are essential for performance and long engine life. Owners should also note: The DR650SE uses a distinctive foam filter system supported by a plastic cage, and precise installation is crucial for optimal filtration and sealing.

Tools & Supplies Needed

  • O-ring safe cleaner (such as a dedicated air filter cleaning solution or mild dish soap)
  • Foam-specific air filter oil
  • Clean rags
  • Latex or nitrile gloves (recommended)
  • Grease (for sealing the filter rim)

Accessing the Air Filter

  • Park your DR650SE on a level surface with the engine cool.
  • Remove the seat by loosening the rear seat bolts and sliding the seat back.
  • Take off the left side panel to reveal the airbox cover.
  • Undo the bolts or quick-release fasteners holding the airbox cover in place.
  • Carefully pull out the foam air filter assembly—the filter sits on a plastic cage that supports its shape and provides an essential seal against the airbox.

Cleaning the Air Filter

  • Gently separate the foam filter from its plastic cage.
  • Submerge the foam filter in warm water mixed with filter cleaner or a mild detergent. Squeeze (do not wring) to dislodge dirt. Rinse thoroughly until water is clear.
Tip: Soak, squeeze, and repeat as needed. Avoid twisting the foam, which can cause tears and reduce filter life.
  • Allow the filter to fully air dry on a clean towel.
Do not reinstall while damp—moisture can compromise filtration.
  • While the filter dries, clean the air filter cage and the interior of the airbox with a rag and suitable cleaner. Check for any signs of oil, excessive dust, or damage inside the airbox.

Oil & Reinstall the Air Filter

  • Once completely dry, liberally apply foam air filter oil. Work the oil into the foam for even coverage, targeting all pleats and surfaces.
Note: Using spray-on oil? Hold the can about three inches away and spray until the foam is evenly coated, then let it sit for at least 20 minutes to allow absorption. Non-aerosol oils can be poured and worked through by hand.
  • Run a thin bead of grease around the sealing lip of the filter to improve the airbox seal and prevent any unfiltered air bypass.

Installing the Air Filter

  • Fit the foam filter back onto the plastic cage. The "UP" marking on the foam should face up; the pointy end points to the throttle (right side of the bike), the flat end faces out toward the airbox opening. Take care to seat the filter squarely against the cage and ensure the orientation is correct.
  • Installing the retaining clip can be fiddly. Many DR650SE owners find that installing with the cupped end of the clip facing up allows easier insertion and reduces deformation of the filter.
  • Gently press the assembly into the airbox, ensuring a snug, complete seal against the housing. Failure to properly seat the filter can allow dirt past the filter and cause engine damage.
  • Reinstall the airbox cover, side panel, and seat.

When to Replace Your Air Filter

  • Inspect the filter during every oil change. Replace immediately if foam shows signs of tearing, brittleness, or cannot be cleaned fully.
  • Riding in dusty or wet conditions may warrant more frequent service or filter changes.

2001 DR650SE-Specific Tips

  • The plastic filter cage is essential for filter performance—replace if cracked or misshapen.
  • Check for the integrity of the stock retaining hardware. Correct clip orientation prevents filter damage and ensures proper seal.
  • Aftermarket two-stage filters, such as Uni Filter, are available for enhanced dust protection but retain the sometimes tricky installation due to the airbox layout.

Keeping the air filter on your 2001 Suzuki DR650SE clean, oiled, and properly seated ensures maximum performance and engine longevity—and reduces the risk of costly repairs. For every air filtration component, tool, and accessory, trust MotoSport to keep your ride running strong.
