The Yamaha XT225's reputation for reliability depends on routine maintenance, and air filter care is crucial for both engine performance & longevity. The 2000 XT225 uses a foam air filter housed behind the left-side cover. Cleaning and proper oiling of this filter prevents dust & debris from damaging your engine – common issues for trail and street riders alike.

Accessing the Air Filter

  • Remove the left side panel: Use a 10 mm bolt and three Phillips head screws to access the airbox cover.
  • Carefully pull out the foam air filter, taking note not to drop dirt into the air boot. Inspect the air boot – a quick wipe with a clean rag and some contact cleaner (or similar) ensures no debris enters the intake.
Special to the XT225: The airbox features a "snorkel" insert that some riders remove for increased airflow. However, caution is needed, as removing it can allow more dust, dirt, and water into the system.

Cleaning the Foam Filter

  • Rinse the foam filter in a solution of warm water and dedicated foam filter cleaner. For stubborn grime, washing with mild detergent can also work.
  • NEVER use gasoline regularly – it can degrade the filter material, though one-time use is common for very dirty filters (better to use foam filter cleaner).
  • Gently squeeze the filter (do not wring) until debris and oil are removed. Rinse thoroughly and let the filter dry completely before re-oiling.

Oiling – Reinstalling the Filter

  • Use foam air filter oil (petroleum-based or biodegradable). Some owners use regular motor oil in emergencies, but it is thin and might pool in the airbox – a dedicated filter oil is best for trapping dirt.
  • Apply oil generously, working it into the foam until it is thoroughly saturated. The sticky texture is essential for good filtration.
  • Slip the filter back onto its frame, ensuring clips or seals are properly engaged. Install the filter in the airbox, replace the cover, and secure with the Phillips screws and the 10 mm bolt.

Replacement Intervals – Notes Specific to the XT225

  • On the 2000 XT225, cleaning intervals depend on riding conditions. Dusty, off-road use: inspect & clean after every ride. Light street or dual-sport: every 3–5 rides.
  • Replace the foam air filter when it shows signs of wear, tearing, or persistent staining. Most XT225 owners opt for a direct replacement with a UNI or equivalent filter for best fitment.
  • Unlike paper filters, the XT225's foam filter should always be re-oiled after cleaning. Running dry will result in dirt bypassing and engine scoring.

Unique Considerations for 2000 XT225 Owners

  • Airbox seals: Check the rubber grommets and gasket for cracks – leaks can lead to engine damage.
  • Snorkel removal: Common on XT225s for performance, but can increase filter maintenance needs. If you ride in wet environments, keep it installed to minimize water intrusion.
  • Previous owner checks: Always inspect the air filter's oil level when buying used. Dry foam is a red flag for a neglected intake system.
