The air filter in your 1993 Yamaha XT600 is your engine's first line of defense against dirt, dust and debris. Keeping it clean and replacing it as needed is essential to maintaining strong performance, reliable starting and prolonging engine life. The XT600 uses a foam air filter element, which is standard for off-road motorcycles and robust enough for all types of conditions this iconic dual-sport tackles.

Accessing the Air Filter

  • Remove the left side panel by unscrewing the panel fasteners, then tilt and lift it off to reveal the airbox–the panel is held with a fixed screw, a pop peg, and hooks into the airbox.
  • If necessary, remove the seat and/or the fuel tank (typically secured by a 10 mm bolt) for easier access.
  • Unscrew the airbox cover fasteners. Carefully lift off the cover to expose the air filter. Note how the filter seats in the airbox to ensure correct installation later.

Cleaning the Air Filter

  • Remove the filter from the airbox. Inspect for tears, hard or crumbling foam–replace immediately if damaged.
  • To clean, immerse the filter in a dedicated foam filter cleaner or use a mild detergent in warm water. Work the solution gently through the foam, squeezing but never wringing to avoid tearing the material.
  • Rinse thoroughly in clean water until all dirt and cleaning agent residues are gone. Squeeze out water and let the filter air dry completely before oiling.
  • While the filter dries, wipe out the airbox using a clean, damp cloth. Inspect for any dirt or debris in the air boot and clean as needed.

Oiling and Reinstalling the Filter

  • Once dry, apply high-quality foam filter oil liberally and work it thoroughly into the foam. The filter must feel tacky all over but not dripping.
  • Grease the rim of the filter with waterproof grease to improve the seal in the airbox
  • Reinstall the filter, ensuring it fits snugly and is properly seated in the airbox. Replace the cover and fasten securely.
  • Reattach the side panels, seat, and any tank mountings removed during the process.

When to Replace the Air Filter

  • If the foam is torn, brittle, or fails to spring back, replace it immediately–repeated cleaning can degrade foam over time.
  • As a rule of thumb, foam filters are good for about 8–12 cleanings if maintained properly.
  • Frequent riding in dust or mud dramatically decreases filter life and increases cleaning frequency.

XT600 Owner’s Notes

  • The 1993 XT600's airbox uses a simple, robust mounting–no complex clips, unlike some newer models, but pay attention to gasket or sealing grease for an airtight fit.
  • Owners often upgrade to reusable performance filters like K&N; verify compatibility and follow manufacturer-specific cleaning routines.
  • Do not start or operate your XT600 without the air filter element installed–this can cause rapid engine wear and costly damage.
  • Always inspect the condition of filter seals, side panel fit, and airbox hardware before dirt, water or dust rides.

Keeping your XT600’s air filter clean means more adventures with reliable throttle response and engine longevity–make it part of your regular maintenance routine.
