Proper air filter maintenance is essential for getting the best performance, fuel economy, and engine life out of your 1987 Yamaha XT600. This model uses an OEM-style, reusable two-stage foam air filter which is easy to remove, clean, and re-oil. Keeping the air filter in top shape helps keep dirt and debris out of your engine—especially important for the air-cooled, dual sport design of the XT600, which is often used in dusty or dirty conditions.

Unique Notes About the 1987 Yamaha XT600

  • This model is renowned for its rugged reliability and versatility, but maintaining a clean air filter is critical since the XT600's single-cylinder engine is sensitive to dust and restricted airflow.
  • The foam filter can be washed and reused, unlike some paper elements. Make sure you never operate the XT600 without the air filter installed, as unfiltered air can quickly damage the engine.
  • The air box is accessible by removing the left side panel and loosening the seat and tank as needed, giving straightforward access for filter service.

Tools & Supplies Needed

  • Phillips screwdriver or 10mm wrench (for side panel, seat bolts)
  • Foam air filter cleaner (or mild soap and water)
  • Foam filter specific oil
  • Soft brush (optional)
  • Clean rags or paper towels
  • Latex or nitrile gloves

Step-by-Step Air Filter Removal

  1. Ensure the XT600 is clean to avoid knocking debris into the airbox.
  2. Remove the left side panel by unscrewing the mounting screw and disengaging the rear peg.
  3. Remove the seat by taking out the bolts at the rear and sides. You may also need to loosen the rear tank bolt for easier access.
  4. Locate the airbox cover and remove its screws.
  5. Gently pull out the foam air filter element.

Cleaning the Air Filter

  • Inspect the filter for tears or decay. Replace if damaged.
  • Submerge the filter in a bucket of foam filter cleaner (or warm water and mild soap) and gently squeeze out dirt. Do not wring or twist, which can damage the foam.
  • Rinse thoroughly with clean water until all soap is gone.
  • Gently squeeze out excess water and allow the filter to dry fully before continuing.

Oiling & Reinstalling the Filter

  1. Pour air filter oil onto the dry filter and work it in until the entire filter is evenly coated. The filter should feel sticky, not dripping.
  2. Wipe a thin layer of grease around the filter's sealing edge for a dust-tight seal in the airbox.
  3. Reinstall the filter, making sure it's seated properly to prevent dirt from bypassing the filter.
  4. Reattach the airbox cover, seat, and side panel securely.

How Often Should You Service the Air Filter?

  • Clean and re-oil the air filter after every few rides in dusty environments, or at minimum every 1,000 miles during typical use.
  • Inspect after any unusually dirty ride or following heavy rain/mud exposure.
  • Replace the filter if it feels brittle, won't clean up, or is torn.

Pro Tips for 1987 XT600 Owners

  • Always use oil designed specifically for foam air filters, as regular motor oil will not trap dirt properly.
  • Double-check the airbox cover seal and filter placement each service, as improper seating is a common source of dust intrusion.
  • If riding in very dusty or sandy conditions, consider keeping a spare pre-oiled filter on hand for quick swaps in the field.
