Air Filter Cleaning – Replacement Guide for 1986 Yamaha XT600
Shop parts for a 1986 Yamaha XT600 Dirt Bike.Keeping your 1986 Yamaha XT600 running strong depends on proper air filter maintenance. The XT600 uses a foam-type air filter, designed for off-road durability but demanding regular cleaning and oiling to perform effectively. Neglecting this step can lead to restricted airflow and increased engine wear.
Tools & Supplies Needed
- 8mm or 10mm socket (for seat and side panel bolts)
- Filter-specific cleaning solution or mild dish soap
- Bucket with warm water
- Foam air filter oil
- Clean, lint-free towels
- Nitrile gloves (optional)
- Waterproof grease
Accessing the Air Filter
- Remove the seat by undoing the bolts at the rear. XT600 models typically use two 10mm bolts under the seat.
- Remove the left side cover. One screw at the front and a rear peg secure the panel; after removing the screw, slide the panel out carefully.
- With these pieces removed, you will see the airbox cover. Unscrew any bolts and pull the lid off to access the filter – the filter sits inside the airbox frame .
Cleaning the Air Filter
- Carefully remove the foam filter. Note the orientation and any sealing surfaces or gaskets.
- Inspect the filter for damage. Replace it if it is torn or permanently deformed.
- Wash the filter in a bucket of warm water with filter cleaner or mild soap. Gently squeeze (do not wring or twist, as this can tear the foam).
- Rinse thoroughly and gently squeeze out excess water.
- Let the filter dry completely before re-oiling.
Re-Oiling & Reinstallation
- Once dry, pour foam-specific air filter oil over the filter. Place the filter and oil in a disposable bag or use your gloved hands to massage oil throughout until the foam is evenly coated. Every part of the filter should have oil, but it should not be dripping .
- Wipe off excess oil and make sure the filter is saturated with no dry spots.
- If your XT600 uses a filter holding screw with a separate plate/washer, ensure that the smooth side faces the foam to prevent cutting the material .
- Apply a light layer of waterproof grease around the sealing edge of the air filter to ensure no unfiltered air bypasses the element .
- Reinstall the filter into the airbox, checking that it seats evenly and that the cover seals all around.
- Reinstall the airbox lid, side cover, and seat in reverse order.
When to Inspect or Replace
- Clean and oil the filter after every dusty ride, or at least every 10-15 hours of riding.
- If the foam shows tears, is permanently deformed, or cannot be fully cleaned, replace it immediately to avoid engine damage.
XT600 Owner Tips & Notes
- The 1986 XT600's airbox often accumulates excess moisture and oil mist after intense rides. Wipe out the airbox and check for pooled oil at the bottom each time the filter is serviced .
- The foam filter on this model needs uniform oiling to protect the engine from fine dust; missing spots is a primary cause of premature wear.
- Only use foam filter oil – liquid adhesives such as motor oil will not provide enough dust filtration.
- Check for secure fit when reinstalling; any gaps can pull in dirt, risking the engine.
