How Often Should You Clean or Replace the Air Filter?

- A clean towel or mat for your workspace
- Filter-specific cleaning solvent or mild detergent
- Bucket with warm water
- Filter oil (foam-specific)
- Replacement air filter (if required)
Removal & Cleaning Process
- Remove the seat to access the airbox by loosening the seat bolts under the rear fender.
- Unscrew and carefully remove the filter cage and filter from the airbox. Note the high positioning of the air inlet–this is by design to keep out mud and moisture.
- If reusing, inspect the foam for integrity.
- Soak the foam filter in a cleaning solution or warm soapy water. Work out dirt by hand, avoiding excessive wringing that can tear the foam.
- Rinse the filter thoroughly with clean water and gently squeeze excess moisture out. Air dry fully before oiling.
- Apply quality foam filter oil evenly. Massage into the foam to ensure full coverage but do not over-saturate.
- Wipe inside the airbox with a clean, slightly damp cloth to remove accumulated dust or grit.
- Reinstall the filter on the cage, then securely fit back into the airbox. Check the seal around the filter for any gaps.
- Reattach the seat and confirm all fasteners are tight.
Replacement Notes for the 1980 KDX80
- The airbox is designed to be large and easy to access, minimizing chance of dirt entering the engine when changing filters. Take care during reinstallation to prevent any dirt from dropping into the intake tract.
- Choose foam filters specifically made for the KDX80 year, model, and make for the best fit and function.
