The 2017 Honda CRF450X is one of the final model years of this trail-oriented platform before the CRF450RX effectively replaced it as Honda’s off-road competition 450. The 2017 CRF450X retains the DOHC engine architecture from the established CRF450X lineage, in contrast to the 2017 CRF450R which moved to the new unicam design. This means the 2017 CRF450X uses DOHC-specific engine torque specifications, including dual cam sprocket bolt values, that differ from the 2017 CRF450R unicam specs.
Engine Fasteners — DOHC vs. Unicam Note
The 2017 CRF450X retains the DOHC engine despite the CRF450R switching to unicam that year. Cam sprocket bolt torque on the 2017 CRF450X uses the dual-cam spec with individual intake and exhaust sprocket bolts—do not apply the 2017 CRF450R unicam single-sprocket bolt torque to the 2017 CRF450X DOHC. The higher unicam sprocket torque applied to the smaller DOHC cam bolts will strip the bolt threads.
