The 2016 KTM 350EXCF introduced a new chassis generation with a redesigned chromoly steel frame featuring revised geometry and improved rigidity-to-weight ratio. New WP Xplor fork internals with a twin-spring system significantly improved handling precision and plushness on demanding enduro terrain.
Engine Torque Specifications
The 2016 engine benefited from updated piston and ring specifications for improved reliability at sustained enduro power levels. Cylinder head torque sequence is unchanged; however, the new piston specification changes the recommended piston-to-wall clearance check procedure — consult the 2016 service manual.
| Fastener | Torque Specification | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Spark plug | 20 – 25 Nm (15 – 18 ft-lb) | Seat by hand; anti-seize on aluminum heads |
| Cylinder head bolts | 12 – 15 Nm (9 – 11 ft-lb) | Multiple-pass sequence per service manual; new gasket |
| Camshaft cap bolts | 10 – 12 Nm (7 – 9 ft-lb) | Verify cam timing marks before final torque |
| Flywheel rotor bolt | 45 – 55 Nm (33 – 41 ft-lb) | Thread locker; holding tool required |
| Clutch hub nut | 70 – 80 Nm (52 – 59 ft-lb) | Thread locker; stake after torquing |
| Oil drain plug | 20 – 25 Nm (15 – 18 ft-lb) | New crush washer each service |
Drivetrain & Wheel Torque Specifications
The 2016 chassis revision updated the rear axle adjuster interface. Verify that the new-style adjuster is seated correctly in the swingarm before applying axle torque.
| Fastener | Torque Specification | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Front axle nut | 20 – 25 Nm (15 – 18 ft-lb) | Torque lower leg pinch bolts after axle seated |
| Rear axle nut | 70 – 80 Nm (52 – 59 ft-lb) | Verify chain alignment before final torque |
| Rear sprocket bolts | 35 – 40 Nm (26 – 30 ft-lb) | Medium-strength thread locker |
| Chain adjuster lock nuts | 20 – 25 Nm (15 – 18 ft-lb) | Equal alignment marks both sides |
Suspension & Chassis Torque Specifications
The 2016 WP Xplor suspension uses a twin-spring system differing from prior years. Fork clamp torque specifications are unchanged but the fork diameter and clamp bore geometry changed — do not use prior-year clamping components on 2016+ forks.
| Fastener | Torque Specification | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Lower fork clamp bolts | 15 – 17 Nm (11 – 13 ft-lb) | Tighten before upper clamps |
| Upper fork clamp bolts | 15 – 17 Nm (11 – 13 ft-lb) | Tighten after lower clamps set |
| Handlebar clamp bolts | 20 – 22 Nm (15 – 16 ft-lb) | Front bolts first; center bar before torquing |
| Swingarm pivot bolt | 60 – 70 Nm (44 – 52 ft-lb) | Grease needle bearings; confirm free rotation |
| Rear shock linkage bolts | 50 – 60 Nm (37 – 44 ft-lb) | Inspect and replace worn bearings before reassembly |
Brake System Torque Specifications
| Fastener | Torque Specification | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Front brake caliper bolts | 25 – 30 Nm (18 – 22 ft-lb) | Check slide pin movement after torquing |
| Rear brake caliper bolts | 25 – 30 Nm (18 – 22 ft-lb) | Thread locker; verify rotor clearance |
| Front brake disc bolts | 15 – 18 Nm (11 – 13 ft-lb) | Thread locker; star pattern |
| Rear brake disc bolts | 15 – 18 Nm (11 – 13 ft-lb) | Thread locker; replace corroded bolts |
Dry vs. Wet Torque
All values listed are dry torque specifications for clean, unlubricated threads at ambient temperature. Apply grease to bearing surfaces (not bolt threads) at the swingarm pivot and rear shock linkage, then target the lower end of the specified range at those locations and confirm smooth, drag-free bearing rotation after tightening.
Thread Locker Guide
- Medium-strength (blue): rear sprocket bolts, front and rear brake disc bolts, rear caliper bolts, flywheel bolt
- Clutch hub nut: medium-strength thread locker plus mechanical staking
- No thread locker: cylinder head bolts, camshaft cap bolts, axle hardware, fork clamp bolts
- Anti-seize: exhaust header mounting hardware only
Torque Wrench Selection
A quality click-type torque wrench in the 10–80 Nm range handles all major chassis, drivetrain, and engine fasteners on the 2016 350EXCF. A compact 5–25 Nm wrench is recommended for cylinder head bolts, camshaft cap bolts, and other precision engine fasteners where accuracy at the lower end of the range is critical. Calibrate all torque tools at least annually.
