Symptoms of Steering Post Pivot Wear on the XR 550 XT

Reconnecting the Tie Rods and Completing the Build

Reassemble the XR 550 XT’s steering stem hardware in reverse order: retaining nut and any associated washers or lock hardware first, adjusted to the correct preload, then handlebar clamp bolts torqued to spec at the same bar position as before disassembly. On utility ATVs with accessory wiring or hydraulic brake lines routed at the bars, confirm routing is unchanged and there are no new pinch points introduced by the reinstallation before moving to the tie rods.

Reconnect both tie rod ends to the steering arm on the XR 550 XT, torque the castle nuts, and install new cotter pins. Reinstall any front rack hardware removed at the start of the job, lower the ATV to the ground, and walk it forward while turning the bars to both sides. Everything should feel smooth, light, and notably more precise than the worn bearing allowed before service.
