Torque Specs for the 1996 Honda XR200
Shop parts for a 1996 Honda XR200 Dirt Bike.
The 1996 Honda XR200 is a late-production model from the second decade of the XR200's run. The 194cc air-cooled OHC four-stroke and five-speed gearbox continue as the proven platform, and the torque specs are fully consistent with the rest of the XR200 lineup. This guide covers all the key torque values for the 1996 model.
Drivetrain & Axle Torque
The five-speed gearbox and chain drive on the 1996 XR200 require regular chain maintenance. The rear axle nut is torqued higher than the front, and the full set of axle and lock nut hardware must be re-torqued after every chain adjustment.
| Fastener | Torque (ft-lb) | Torque (Nm) |
|---|---|---|
| Front axle nut | 36–44 | 49–59 |
| Rear axle nut | 44–51 | 59–69 |
| Rear sprocket nuts | 29–36 | 39–49 |
| Chain adjuster lock nuts | 11–13 | 15–18 |
Engine Torque Specs
The 194cc OHC engine in the 1996 XR200 is a proven performer with well-established torque values across all commonly serviced fasteners. Head bolt cross-pattern sequence is critical during any top-end or gasket work.
| Fastener | Torque (ft-lb) | Torque (Nm) |
|---|---|---|
| Spark plug | 13–18 | 18–25 |
| Oil drain bolt | 18–22 | 25–29 |
| Cylinder head bolts | 22–26 | 29–35 |
| Cylinder base bolts | 11–14 | 15–19 |
| Rocker cover bolts | 7–9 | 10–12 |
Suspension & Chassis Hardware
Fork clamp torque and handlebar clamp torque are different on the 1996 XR200—handlebar clamps are torqued higher. The swingarm pivot is the chassis fastener that receives the most force in real trail riding and should be checked annually.
| Fastener | Torque (ft-lb) | Torque (Nm) |
|---|---|---|
| Fork clamp bolts | 11–14 | 15–19 |
| Handlebar clamp bolts | 16–20 | 22–27 |
| Swingarm pivot bolt | 51–65 | 69–88 |
| Rear shock upper bolt | 22–26 | 30–35 |
| Rear shock lower bolt | 22–26 | 30–35 |
Torque Wrench Notes
A 3/8-inch drive torque wrench handles most of the 1996 XR200's fasteners well. A 1/2-inch drive is recommended for the swingarm pivot and rear axle nut at the higher end of the torque range. Anti-seize on exhaust hardware, thread locker on sprocket and shock mount bolts, and dry torque values as the baseline are all recommended practices.
