Choosing the Hose and Getting Organized
Start with hose rated specifically for gasoline in the inside diameter that matches this quad's barbs. Vacuum tubing sits on the same rack at most shops and looks the part, but it softens and starts weeping within a riding season once fuel runs through it. Cut the new piece a little long so you can trim it to a natural curve. The rest of the list is short:
- Two new clamps, small worm-gear or a matched pinch-clamp kit
- Nitrile gloves and safety glasses
- A metal or fuel-safe container for the drained fuel
- Flat screwdriver, needle-nose pliers, hose cutter or sharp utility knife
- Rags and a spray bottle of soapy water
Take the gasoline seriously even in these small amounts. Vapor is heavier than air and collects at floor level where pilot lights and shop heaters live, so work outdoors or with the door fully open, keep every flame and spark away, and let a warm engine cool before opening the fuel path. Gloves stay on the whole time, since gasoline absorbs through skin and strips its oils out quickly.
Why the Old Line Hardened
Rubber fuel hose ages chemically. Gasoline in constant contact with the inner wall leaches out the plasticizers that keep the material flexible, and the hose gradually stiffens until it no longer conforms to the barb it is clamped over. Once that grip is gone, vibration and heat cycling finish the job. On an air-cooled single the end nearest the cylinder gets the worst of it, and in a dry climate the outer jacket dries and crazes at the same time.
Sitting fuel accelerates all of it. Youth quads see concentrated use and then long parked stretches, and ethanol-blended gas left in a warm line separates and oxidizes rather than staying stable. The varnish it leaves behind coats the inner wall, narrows the flow path, and can swell softer rubber compounds from within. Two seasons parked with a full tank does more to a DS90X fuel line than two seasons of regular riding.
Symptoms Worth Acting On
- Fuel smell around the quad hours after the last ride
- A drip or damp stain on the floor beneath the carburetor or petcock
- Cracks that open up when the hose is flexed between your fingers
- A hard, brittle feel where soft rubber should be
- Sticky varnish or discoloration at either clamp
- An engine that bogs, hesitates, or runs lean after a few minutes of steady throttle
Do not assume that final symptom is jetting. A line swollen closed internally or a clamp letting air in cannot refill the float bowl fast enough, and the stumble it produces looks exactly like a carburetor problem. Check the hose thoroughly first and save yourself a teardown.
Draining and Getting the Old Hose Off
Turn the petcock to OFF and let flow stop. That single valve shuts down the whole supply on a carbureted gravity-fed quad, which is what makes this cleaner than the equivalent job on a fuel-injected machine with pressurized plumbing. Slide the drain container underneath even so, because an older petcock can seep past its seat. Open the float bowl drain screw and empty the bowl into the container instead of onto the frame.
Work the carburetor connection first. Slide the clamp back along the hose, twist the hose a quarter turn to break its bond with the barb, then pull it off. Old, hardened line tears when yanked and leaves a ring of rubber stuck to the fitting — pick that off with a fingernail or a plastic pick, and keep screwdrivers away from the sealing surface. Free the petcock end the same way. Note the original routing before the hose is out of the quad entirely. With two-wheel drive and chain final drive there is no front differential housing to route around on a DS90X, but the hose still needs clearance for the steering stem through its full travel.
Making the Connections
Thread both clamps onto the new hose before either end goes near a fitting. Softening the ends in hot water for thirty seconds makes them push onto the barbs without a struggle. Seat each end completely against the shoulder, then place the clamps just behind the barb ridge where they compress against something solid rather than bare hose. Firm is right, crushed is not — a clamp cutting into rubber starts a leak the following season. Grease and assembly lubricants have no place on a fuel fitting, since they contaminate the fuel and let the hose slide off the barb once heat softens it. Trim the line so it takes an easy curve with no kinks and no tension at either end.
Leak Check and Final Walkthrough
Open the petcock and study both joints for two full minutes with a light. Dry them with a rag and look once more for anything fresh. Mist soapy water at the connections, start the engine, and watch for bubbles forming at a barb. Shut down warm and inspect again, because a marginal seal usually only weeps at temperature. Turn the bars lock to lock to confirm the hose neither stretches nor pinches, and the 2015 DS90X is ready for its next ride.
