How to Change the Fuel Line on a 2021 Kubota RTV520

The RTV520 spends its life doing chores, and chore machines get maintained on the day something goes wrong rather than on a schedule. Fuel hose is one of the few items where waiting costs you more than acting early, because a weeping line on a gasoline-powered work machine is both a running problem and a fire risk. This model runs a carbureted air-cooled twin with a manual fuel valve, so the repair is mechanical from start to finish. No pump to depressurize, no injector rail, no electronics involved.

Confirming What You Are Working With

Before any tools come out, understand the layout. Fuel travels from the tank through a shutoff valve, down a rubber line, past an inline filter, and into the carburetor. Because there is no fuel pressure in the system, closing that valve stops the flow completely and the only gasoline you have to deal with is what already sits downstream. That is a meaningful advantage over an injected machine, where the line stays pressurized after shutdown and has to be bled before anything gets disconnected.

The RTV520 is a four-wheel-drive machine, and that matters mainly for access. Front differential hardware and the hydrostatic drive components fill the chassis, and the fuel line has to be routed around structure that a simpler two-wheel-drive layout does not carry. Plan on removing the seat and any access panel that stands between you and the tank so you can see the full length of hose at once rather than working blind through a gap.

Reasons Fuel Hose Wears Out

Rubber fuel line ages whether the machine gets used or not. The compounds that keep it pliable slowly leave the material, and the wall hardens until it can no longer absorb vibration or flex. Heat from the engine bay speeds this up, and once a hose has gone rigid, ordinary working vibration cracks its surface. Machines kept in dry, hot climates get there faster, since low ambient humidity draws moisture out of the hose wall and stiffens it prematurely.

Ethanol-blended gasoline works on the inside. It absorbs water out of the air and slowly degrades the inner liner, which softens and swells and sends fine particles toward the carburetor. A utility machine that sits for weeks between jobs with that fuel standing in the line accumulates gum and varnish on top of the chemical damage, and those deposits both restrict flow and bond the hose to its fittings.

Symptoms That Point at the Line

  • Gasoline pooling on the ground beneath the engine bay after the machine has been parked
  • A strong fuel smell in an enclosed shed or barn, which is the earliest warning many owners get
  • Cracking, chalkiness, or a stiff, creased section you can feel by pinching along the hose
  • A dust-caked ring at either fitting where seeping fuel has dried and collected grime
  • The engine bogging under load, dying while pulling a trailer or climbing, or acting starved while the tank still reads full

A restricted line is easy to misread as a carburetor problem. At idle the engine draws very little fuel, so a partially blocked hose keeps up fine until the moment you put the machine to work and demand doubles.

Draining and Removing the Old Hose

Close the fuel valve, then disconnect the battery negative cable. Open up access to the tank and follow the hose all the way to the carburetor inlet, photographing every clip, grommet, and clearance point as you go. Because of the four-wheel-drive hardware in this chassis, the path is not always obvious once the original hose is out, and a photo saves guesswork.

Deal with the fuel still trapped downstream before opening any connection. The carburetor has a drain at the base of the float bowl; slide a short piece of clear tubing onto it, run that into your catch container, and loosen the drain screw until the bowl empties. Place a pan under the tank-side fitting as well and lay a rag over it, because even a valved-off line holds enough gasoline to run down your forearm.

Slide each clamp back along the hose before touching the joint. Aged rubber sticks to a metal barb with dried varnish, so twist the hose to break the bond rather than yanking on it. When a section will not release, slit it lengthwise with a razor knife and peel it off. Preserving the valve spigot and the carburetor inlet is worth the extra minute, since both bend easily and neither is a cheap mistake.

Fitting and Securing the New Line

Use the old hose as your template and cut the new piece to the same length. Excess hose sags into moving components or wears against a frame member, and a piece cut short pulls at both fittings whenever the engine shifts on its mounts. Push each end on dry until it seats fully past the raised bead on the barb.

Do not lubricate the fittings. Grease, oil, or silicone spray on the sealing surface gives fuel a path to migrate out under the hose regardless of how much clamp tension you add. If the new line is too stiff to slide on, dip the end in hot water for half a minute and it will go on without a fight. Set the clamps just behind the bead, tighten them evenly until the hose no longer rotates by hand, and stop there rather than crushing the wall.

Route the line back through its original clips and guides. Keep it well away from exhaust heat and clear of anything that moves with suspension travel or steering. Close the float bowl drain screw before you go further, since it is an easy one to leave open and a frustrating way to lose a tank of fuel.

Leak Check and Wrapping Up

Reconnect the battery, open the fuel valve, and then simply leave the machine alone for a minute or two. Gravity refills the hose and the float bowl during that pause, and a static system is the cleanest environment for finding a slow seep. Wipe both joints dry, run a fingertip around each, and look for spotting on a rag placed underneath.

Start the engine and inspect again with everything running and vibrating, then load the machine lightly and check once more. Only when both connections stay bone dry through a short working cycle should the access panels and seat go back on. One convenient detail of a carbureted setup like this one: the fuel filter sits inline where you can see and reach it, rather than being built into a pump assembly inside the tank the way it is on injected machines. With the system already drained, swapping that filter alongside the hose takes almost no additional effort and refreshes the entire delivery path in one sitting.
