A healthy line is soft and springs back; one that feels like a plastic tube or shows fine cracks when you flex it is finished, regardless of how it looks from three feet away.

Draining and Pulling the Old Line

Open the float bowl drain screw and let the residual fuel run into your container so it does not end up on your forearm when the hose lets go. Back the clamps off and slide them well clear. Hose that has been baked onto a fitting for several seasons often will not budge; slice it lengthwise with the blade and peel it away instead of prying, which protects the soft brass and plastic barbs underneath. Installing the Replacement
Lay the old hose next to the new one and cut to matching length with a square end. Thread both clamps onto the hose before it goes on. Push each end fully over its barb until it seats past the raised ridge — dipping the hose ends in hot water for a minute softens them enough that they slide on without a fight. Do not lubricate the fittings with grease, oil, or silicone spray. It contaminates the sealing surface, and a slick barb will let the hose creep out from under the clamp over time. Set the clamps just behind the barbs and tighten them evenly, snug enough to seal without cutting into the rubber.

Turn the petcock back on and let the float bowl fill. Watch both connections closely under a bright light for a couple of minutes — a slow leak shows up as a darkening ring at the clamp rather than a visible drip. Dry everything with a clean rag, start the engine, let it idle until it warms, and inspect again once vibration has had a chance to reveal a joint that only seals when static. While the bodywork is off, look over the tank vent hose and the inline filter if one is fitted, since a restricted filter produces the same starved-for-fuel behavior you may have been chasing. Check the new hose once more after your first ride, and then fold it into your regular pre-ride walkaround.
