It hardens, cracks, and weeps fuel where you cannot see it, eventually either starving the engine or putting gasoline somewhere it should never be. Swapping it needs no specialty tools and no shop time.
Confirming the Fuel System on Your 2022 Yamaha TW200
The 2022 Yamaha TW200 runs a carbureted fuel system, which works in your favor. Fuel leaves the tank through a petcock — the small valve underneath — travels down a short rubber hose, and enters the carburetor at the float bowl inlet. You can shut fuel off at the source, and the line is a simple two-clamp affair with no pump pressure behind it.
What Actually Kills a Fuel Line
Two things degrade a fuel line: time, and what sits inside it. Rubber loses flexibility as it ages, and a hose that spent eight years on a 2022 Yamaha TW200 has been hardening the whole time, ridden or parked. Hardened rubber cannot absorb vibration, so it cracks where it stretches over a fitting. Ethanol-blended gasoline is the other half — fuel sitting unused for months attracts moisture and breaks down, which is rough on hose material and leaves varnish behind. - Persistent gasoline smell. If you smell fuel with the bike cold and untouched, something is leaking.
- Cracks that appear when you flex the hose. Dry rot hides at rest and reveals itself the moment rubber bends.
- Swelling or a soft, mushy section. The opposite of hardening and just as bad — usually chemical attack.
- Surging or dying under load. Restricted flow mimics fuel starvation and gets misdiagnosed as a jetting problem.
Tools & Preparation
The parts list is short and the tool list shorter. Lay it out before breaking the first connection.
- Replacement fuel line in the correct inside diameter and length for your 2022 Yamaha TW200. Match the original rather than guessing — oversized line will not seal on the barb.
- New clamps. Spring clamps lose tension with age, and a small clamp kit costs very little.
- Nitrile or rubber gloves. Gasoline absorbs through skin.
- A fuel-safe drain container and a funnel if you plan to reuse the fuel.
- Pliers and a small flat screwdriver for spring and screw clamps respectively.
- Shop rags and eye protection.
One genuine safety note: gasoline vapor is heavier than air and travels along the floor toward anything that can ignite it. Work outdoors or with the door open, shut off any heater with a pilot light, keep the fuel container capped, and let a hot engine cool first.
Draining Down and Pulling the Line
Petcock off, first thing. That valve is why a carbureted bike like the TW200 is forgiving here: shut it and the fuel stops moving.
Capture the fuel sitting downstream. Fit a clear hose to the float bowl drain nipple, run it to your container, and open the drain screw a couple of turns. The bowl empties in under a minute. Close the screw afterward, because a bowl that will not hold fuel is frustrating to diagnose later.
Clamps come next. Squeeze the ears of a spring clamp with pliers and slide it clear, or back off a screw clamp until it moves freely. Then persuade the hose off the barb with a twisting motion rather than a hard yank — old rubber bonds to metal, and a straight pull can bend a carburetor inlet or petcock spigot. When the line is truly seized, slice it lengthwise and peel it away.
Installing the Replacement Hose
Cut the new hose to length using the old one as a template, adding nothing extra. Line that is too long sags into the engine or gets pinched when the tank is bolted down; too short and it tugs at the fittings under vibration. A clean square cut seals better than a ragged one.
Push the new line onto the petcock spigot first, far enough to cover the full barb. Stiff hose goes on more easily after thirty seconds in warm water. What you must not do is lubricate the fitting — no grease, no oil, no silicone. Any of it compromises the seal and can contaminate the fuel path on your 2022 Yamaha TW200.
Position the carburetor end next, checking your routing against how the original sat. Then set the clamps over the barb area, about a quarter inch from the hose end, so they compress rubber against the raised portion of the fitting. Snug is the target with screw clamps, not tight — overtightening cuts into the hose and creates the leak you were preventing.
Confirming It Is Sealed
Restore fuel flow and watch. Open the petcock on your 2022 Yamaha TW200 and leave the bike sitting several minutes with clean cardboard underneath. Gravity finds a poor seal quickly. Look at both fittings with good light, and run a dry fingertip around each joint — fuel is easier to feel than to see.
