Changing the oil in your 2011 Beta 400 RS SM is a straightforward maintenance task that ensures optimal engine performance and reliability. Below is a step-by-step guide, plus model-specific notes every owner should know before getting started.
Tools & Supplies Required
- Socket wrench set (including 8mm, 13mm sockets)
- Oil drain pan
- Torque wrench
- Seeger ring pliers
- Replacement oil filter (paper type)
- BARDAHL XTC 10W–50 engine oil (800ml required)
- Clean rag
- Safety gloves
Oil Change Procedure
- Warm up the engine until it reaches operating temperature – this helps the oil drain completely and suspends contaminants for removal.
- Shut off the engine and park the bike on level ground.

Remove the lower skid plate by unscrewing three 8mm bolts to access the drain area.
Note: The drain plugs are easier to reach with the skid plate off. -
Locate and remove the engine oil drain screw (13mm socket). Drain all engine oil into a pan.
Caution: Oil & engine parts are hot. Avoid burns. - Thoroughly clean the drain screw and the wire netting filter. Replace both, using a new seal ring as needed, and tighten the drain screw to 20 Nm torque.
- Remove the oil filter cover from the engine by unscrewing the two cover screws.
- Use seeger ring pliers to extract the paper oil filter. Fit the new filter in position, reinstall the cover, and torque the screws to 6 Nm.
- Pour 800 ml of fresh BARDAHL XTC 10W–50 engine oil into the fill port on the left engine case. Do NOT overfill.

Start the engine and let it idle for 5 minutes. Shut off and wait another 5 minutes, then check the oil level in the sight window.
Model-specific tip: On the Beta 400 RS SM, check oil level with the engine running; oil should appear in the middle of the sight window. Do not use the transmission oil check plug to adjust engine oil levelfill accurately and trust your measurement. - Inspect for leaks and reinstall the skid plate.
- Dispose of used oil and filter in accordance with local environmental regulations.

- Oil & Transmission: The Beta separates engine and transmission oil compartmentsalways use the correct fluid and fill to the manufacturer's specified volume. Transmission also requires 750 cc gear oil; follow the same draining and refilling process for transmission maintenance.

- Torque Specs: Always torque drain screws and cover fasteners to spec (20 Nm for drain, 6 Nm for filter cover)overtightening can damage threads or seals.
